Be nice if you could just say name of street, but at the mo,that is Star Treck stuff.

You can get GPS systems which do voice recognition - how well they do it is another story.

Wonder what would happen if you said Main Street.

1120617 2010-07-20 12:52:00 I reckon the Tomtom I got from the local Trademe shop is great, easy to use, and with the exception of once getting in a tiz in some road diversions, very reliable. R2x1 (4628)

1120619 2010-07-20 20:46:00 He'll have to enter the address first.
He has no concept of icons, menus or scrolling. It's why he can't read txts longer than one screen on his phone. Took nearly a year to get the hang of even finding the txt to read.

he doesn't use the PC is why I think he finds it hard.

Anyway we'll see what happens.

1120620 2010-07-20 21:46:00 Only problem with the Navman, it has trouble with the pronunciation of Maori street and place names. But you get used to it. Our voice girl is called Flossie. Richard (739)
1120621 2010-07-20 21:49:00 I think we should pass around a collection plate for this poor "down-trodden" male.

I'll bet he wears an apron when he's barefoot in the kitchen too :)

Don't we all?

1120623 2010-07-20 23:20:00 Recently I bought a Garmin Nuvi 255 with NZ and Oz maps for only $168. Used it in Oz for 3 weeks and a bit in Wellington. It does the job very well, better than my expectations. I am very happy with it and even SWMBO was impressed. Never want to be in a big city or new place again without a GPS. Tom Tom gets top reviews here on PF1 but I went for the Garmin because of the cheap price that included the Oz map. Many voices to choose from, male and female, UK, USA, Oz, plus foreign languages. Evidently there are free maps on a NZ site for Garmin - a friend from Canada used a free NZ map when they came here last year. BTW most people say to get a wide screen GPS but if you are on a budget the smaller size is OK - I had no problems reading the screen and the advantage is that it fits in a pocket easily for pedestrian use.
