1120879 2010-07-21 23:26:00 Isn't a program like HDD Regenerator more likely to just kill the drive off with all that work? Agent_24 (57)
1120880 2010-07-21 23:43:00 Isn't a program like HDD Regenerator more likely to just kill the drive off with all that work?NOPE! -- Just in the process of transferring some data from the previously unseen HDD - before the HDD couldn't even been seen in the BIOS, now at least its seen a slave drive through Windows 7.

while its obviously straining and VERY SLOW, I am managing to recover some stuff -- 5GB of pictures so far, with one lockup - rebooted, and carried on.

1120881 2010-07-21 23:51:00 How can HDD Regenerator see it if the BIOS can't?

Isn't that usually an indication of (at the very least) a problem with the system area and thus the drive can't complete its own startup procedure?

I'm not trying to say you are wrong, I'm just interested to know how it could do such a thing

1120882 2010-07-22 00:24:00 Perhaps ISP's can promote backups to their customers on their servers, either free (limited) and various paid versions. Or even PC technicians/partnerships could offer back up solutions... kahawai chaser (3545)
1120883 2010-07-22 00:27:00 Hmm think it is time I look at setting some kind of backup system up. When I get money, Any recommendations? nedkelly (9059)

Heres how it went -- in the original laptop, it couldn't see the drive - I removed the drive slaved it to a W7 PC, it hung on boot up, finally went into the BIOS - only the W7 Drive and optical drive .

When I tried to attach the drive the first time on its own, so I could try linux to recover, it hung for ages, finally booted from the Linux CD - still no drive - rebooted this time from the HDD regenerator CD -- It hesitated for a minute or so, then finally booted and found the drive - done its thing - now the damaged drive can be seen as a slave, and even once tried to boot, got to the welcome screen then froze .

Having several lockups as it hits the massive dead spot, but currently recovered just under 7 GB pictures, several hundred Music Files, AND image . wim (just under 6GB) from the recovery partition, so I can reload the OS from that .

Not to bad from a damaged drive that they thought every thing was lost .

They pay for a service and get it -- many cowboys or wannabes would simply say "To bad alls gone" ;)

1120885 2010-07-22 00:37:00 Or even PC technicians/partnerships could offer back up solutions... Personally I do, BUT some of the time it involves money somewhere - and many people have the attitude " I'm all right Joe - nothing will happen to me"

If you put in a backup solution, it really needs to be automatic - once again, many people find it "to inconvenient" to have to do backups -- thats till it all turns to sh1t, and wish they had done so as advised -- if they are lucky they get a damn good scare and dont lose anything as techs may be able to recover, other times its :crying :groan:

Hindsight's a fine thing.

1120886 2010-07-22 00:40:00 Make sure you hit them in the pocket, wainuitech - so the lesson is learned. Otherwise they'll be back in a few months with the same problem (mind you I suppose that's all good for your cashflow ;)). johcar (6283)

Nice tutorial - I just learnt about swapping drives for back up . But are their not program/systems to prevent/minimize back sectors? Is it the clusters that can get unreadable through physical/or corruption?

Interesting, I think I'll test it on an old IBM Deskstar I have here and see what happens, if it can manage to do anything it will be a miracle!
