1120946 2010-07-21 20:03:00 Well I never, who would have thought so many had heard of such a thing.

I wonder if Billy T uses one?

1120947 2010-07-21 20:09:00 What a set up R2, you one of these survivalists lol.
Have you got a cellar fill of canned food and a gun cupboard and heaps of ammo as well :)
Nope. In the event of invaders, I will pelt them with neighbours cats. The solar panel is a left-over from an installation that taught the owner he didn't really know best after all. I usually use the deep cycle battery to supply the battery chargers for my flying models. (My personal daylight-saving scheme.)

Was told 6 years ago to get a UPS and now will never be without one

With Router wired in get about 10 minutes runtime with a upgraded HD gelCell ,have thought about wiring in a additional battery for more runtime

1120949 2010-07-21 22:02:00 Had one on my work PC for about 5 years or so - paranoid about losing work in the event of a power failure - and have had a cheaper one on the family PC for 3 years, simply to protect the investment from nasty power.

Worth the cost for peace of mind. Interesting that when 3 years was up on the family PC, the NZ office for APC rang me up to sell me a new battery, saying it wasn't safe to rely on one after 3 years of use. Whatever...

Also interesting how often the UPS clicks on - even in ChCh there must be a significant number of power outs or something to trip it. I don't think I have had one since we have been out in the agrarian sector (1 year).

I am sure they are. I am also sure that their research backs this up. And I am also sure that they would not try to rip me off selling me a battery that costs somewhere near the cost of a new UPS from one of their competitors.

Do you run your PC continuously? The UPS should be self testing that it can run on the battery every time you turn it on or every 2 weeks or so.

Errr, then don't use their battery?? They are just a standard cell and very easy to replace. Can get them from most good battery places.
