2011-01-04 20:50:00 | I turned my laptop on this morning and I noticed that it wasn't charging even though my power cord was plugged in. A hp test on the battery confirmed that I needed to replace it, but while i was surfing trade me, I noticed that someone was selling a replacement battery for a really low price. So naturally wanting a good deal, I clicked on his listing and what I read from his/hers description surprised me. This person had also been told by his/her laptop that the battery needed to be replaced, but the problem was in fact due to overheating. I downloaded a temperature app and found out that my CPU temp is about 69*c and climbs to about 75*c on idle. I noticed that my laptop does get rather hot after extended periods of use and I was just wondering, is there a better way to ventilate it? I've tried searching everywhere and haven't really found any answers. The more common one to deal with the temperature problem is to just blow out the dust, but I'm wondering if it's possible to install another fan or something. I wanna try and cool my system down first and see if that solves the issue with the battery before I think about a replacement. Thanks! Note: My laptop started doing this to me just outside the warranty.

2011-01-04 21:05:00 | Welcome to PF1 :) If the cooling ducts are full of dust/ Dirt, adding in another cooler wont do any good, as the hot air still needs to be removed internally. Generally you have to take the laptop back off, or sometimes just about strip the whole thing to get to the cooling ducts/Fan and blow out the blockage. Some are easy - remove the back cover and every thing is visible, others require more in-depth stripping. Edited: a warranty wont cover blocked cooling ducts / dust/dirt buildup.

2011-01-05 06:57:00 | Edited: a warranty wont cover blocked cooling ducts / dust/dirt buildup. When I used to work for HP if a laptop had over heating issues they usually sent us a new HSF unit, and most of the time all I had to do was take to the vent with the compressor. We never charged oir said it was customer damage for that. In fact in the 3 years I did it I would have turned down less than 20 laptops for impact/water damage.

2011-01-05 08:12:00 | The last HP Laptop I had to clean out the thing sounded like a jet taking off, making one hell of a racket, shutting down all the time due to over heating - tried to blow out the vents, but no go - in the end stripped out several components to get to the fan and duct assembly - removed it, had to turn up the compressor to a higher pressure to blow out the duct, it was caked solid, then lowered again, and cleaned out the fan with air along with a brush - after that the Laptop was almost silent, and only just noticeable in warmth - made a huge difference. | wainuitech (129) | |
2011-01-06 03:40:00 | Thanks for the info guys. My battery problem has finally gone away and it turns out it was due to overheating. I cleaned the vents out and everything and the core temp has dropped about 10c. I had to literally take the whole thing apart and then sprayed the heatsink and fan. It amazed me how much dust was in there. :L Anyways, the temp has gone down for now, but from what I've read if you want to ventilate it better then you should buy a notebook cooler? If so, I suppose I should scrimp and save for one. -__- Anways cheers for that!
