| 1122013 | 2010-07-24 13:06:00 | In light of buying a car, I can now no longer afford to smoke (why oh why did I have to work out a budget). As I type, I'm chewing some nicotine gum (minty!), and I've got some patches (not using them at the same time though). Any recommendations? (BTW, I'm quitting now, while I can still afford to relapse ;) |

| 1122016 | 2010-07-24 13:36:00 | I've never smoked before, but I'd say try to keep yourself constantly occupied with something to take your mind off it... Hope this is good advice..? | forrest44 (754) | ||

Not dealing with 3 can make the exersize difficult or even inpossible. it will probably take a fewyears for the occasional random cravings to go away. you know your getting some where when you look at that pretty woman (who smokes) and thing she will taste and smell like a dirty stale ashtray:yuck::yuck::yuck: :) |

One: You have to have it happen in your head first - can't advise on that because it hasn't happened with me yet but I know a few people who made whatever mental adjustment and just stopped. Two: For those who haven't succeeded in the above the only thing I have found works is the e-cigarette, which contains nicotine. Gum doesn't, patches don't. |

Four of my friends were seriously addicted and I was surprised that they decided to quit and even more surprised that they quit for good. In each case point 1 above was crucial: They made a rock solid firm decision to quit and they went cold turkey, not using patches or nicotine gum. Two of the four quit due to health problems caused by smoking. Regarding point 3 above, people say that it is easier to quit these days since smoking is banned in pubs and other places. If the only reason you want to quit is to save money, you will probably not be successful in the long term. The craving to smoke will be with you for years, maybe your lifetime, and you will eventually rationalize that you can afford to smoke. |

| 1122022 | 2010-07-24 21:52:00 | I am lucky in that I never smoked (except of 2 weeks at school to show off, but I could not take it down and thought it was a waste of money) So I do feel sorry for all of you smokers. It must be hard to give up. But please try to do it. I just read that one of my idols (Alex Hurricane Higgins) died of throat cancer. He was one of the best snooker players in the 1980's - Pot Black etc. He blames it on being sponsored by Benson & Hedges. We all have temptations - gambling, smoking, drugs, sex, alcohol. |
