1120594 2010-07-20 04:32:00 Thinking of getting one for husband, he likes the idea of being told where to go. :D

However he has no technical skills at all so it would have to be pathetically easy to use, and big enough for him to read as his eyesight is rubbish at close distances.

Really, he can barely operate his cellphone so really really simple to use......

Any recommendations?
Auckland maps fine, NZ better, anywhere else don't care.

Not too massively expensive either.....

1120595 2010-07-20 04:54:00 Define expensive.

Seriously most would come with a NZ wide map.

I use a Tomtom gps in car. Great when I go to Wellington. You have to think about updates for the maps when they have put a new motorway in etc and what the updates cost.

Noticed a review for a new Tomtom model put out a few days ago.

This may be the one.

1120596 2010-07-20 05:05:00 I quite like (read: LOVE) the Navman MY series. MY30 and MY50 are both great, only difference is the screen size. They have just released a series called the EZY... they are similar to the MY series but apparently even easier to use.

1120597 2010-07-20 05:05:00 I am not sure if one would place importance on free upgrades anyway ...

I find Navman the nicest GUI but Garmin has a larger screen I think and darker colors - from what I seen in the stores. I have the Navman, it is smaller or a higher resolution and has more white colors.

Haven't tried TomTom.

If you do want free map upgrades etc .. even for a limited period, I might rate Navman the last of the lot. Generally Navman don't even give you a Aussie map while others may do it for free. With the smaller customer base, people just won't be making free maps for Navman. Nor could you load them b/c Navman locks it down, you need the internet before you can activate a paid for Navman map afaik. In terms of foreign map selection, its mediocre with Navman. Maps are also not transferable, go to another town or Aussie and your mate has a Navman you cannot load your map into theirs. B/c Navman's TOC does not allow that. AFAIK some of the others allow a map to be run thru a memory card? With my Navman the memory card is really just for maybe POI and stuff or to play your pictures and music, haha.

Navman does the job thou, I don't even use the detour function or fuel calculator or zoom in the map and look at nearest gas station. I just put the address in, it does it search thing and I say go to. If I wanna go elsewhere I pull over and do the whole thing again :D

I think Navman are 2yr warranty but the othes might be 3years

Navman for me.

1120599 2010-07-20 05:14:00 I've only ever used smart-phone based GPS, but the TomTom XL One always gets great reviews . . . . and lets face it, who wouldn't want a choice of voices as diverse as Snoop Dogg, Spongebob Squarepants, or Billy Connelly . . . :D nofam (9009)
1120600 2010-07-20 05:16:00 Consumer recently recommended the TomTom GO 750 - but naturally that's the most expensive! Then the Garmin Nuvi 1390, then the Navman MY55

EDIT: "The TomTom may be $100 more than the other units but it was the best overall, made only minor errors and wasn't irritating to use."

1120601 2010-07-20 05:39:00 No-one has said anything about ease of use.
Cause if it isn't I don't want to be trying to teach him while he throws tantrums. That's what happens with all other technology.

1120602 2010-07-20 05:40:00 Pop into one of the big brand name stores, they normally have a whole bunch set up. Try for yourself! wratterus (105)
1120603 2010-07-20 05:47:00 Navman MY55. Big screen, easy to read. Richard (739)
