| 1168557 | 2011-01-10 09:19:00 | Ok, so my usual catastrophic failure magnet seems to be working overseas (hope it doesn't charge extra for roaming!) I was copying some stuff to and from my external HDD, when I put my laptop (HP DV5 1009ax) to sleep, I realized I had missed a folder and plugged to external back in and tried to "wake" the computer, the LCD back light did not come on but the CPU fan spooled and the LED touch strip at the back of the keyboard lit up. other than that no error beep was shown. the only indication that something was wrong was that the computer didn't wake from sleep. I thought it had frozen in the wake process to I pulled the power and tried to boot. the same thing happened, no LCD backlight (or LCD display) no error beep just the fan, touchpanel and this time the CD drive spooled. I started disassembling to troubleshoot damaged components and the first thing I took out was the HDD, it was also the first thing to cause the laptop to start (and cause me to think oh bloody hell). With the HDD out the laptop went through BIOS, POST and displayed the proper boot device not found error. all working on the laptop. I then disassembled my external so I could use the SATA to USB PCB to connect the drive to another computer to see if i could salvage my HDD's contents. On plugging in the drive I was surprised to see that I could access it and all my files were there. I had all ready tried replugging the drive however the PC would not boot unless the drive was removed. I tried again later, no boot. However, after removing the drive this time the computer exhibited the same "error" of not booting as before. When I replaced the drive again I moved the internal SATA cable around. this time the computer booted. This leads me to believe that the HDD itself is not the issue, rather the SATA cable is. Right now the laptop is functioning fine however I don't belive the "fix" will be permanent. what do you think I should do? I'm in china, computer spares are easy to get hold of. should I ditch the drive for a bigger newer one (this one is a tiny 160gb) and use the 160 one as a backup/external? or try replacing the cable, or even both. :p I gotta love how everything dies on me though!! EDIT, just read a SMART log which states ULTRA DMC error count: Current - 200 Worst - 200 Error scan - 0 Errors - 3 Basicly, that means communication errors, usually caused by a damaged cable. I might get a new HDD and a cable anyway. One question, where would I get one of these cables? are they specific to particular notebooks or generic ISO molex/ribbon connectors |

I've got 2 computers here, one IDE, one SATA that have intermittent boot issues that seem to be based on the cables. Mine works best if the SATA cable is NOT rammed all the way into its socket. |

They caps/num keys blink once for about 1s the go off for 2-3s I think it is constantly repeating the same error code, you be screwed! I think I might be buying a new lappy, I don't think you can buy Turion X2 64 Mobile processors in Beijing easily. I went to an electronics store and boy do they have parts!!! but not a lot of laptop parts = |

| 1168562 | 2011-01-11 02:44:00 | If I buy the processor only its will be ok, but the whole laptop will be in chinese.. maybe, most of them seem to be english and pretty legit. (from bigger stores) I'll download ubuntu if necessary, connect to my PC at home and D/L my win7 ultimate recovery disks. Thats only if I can't download the english language pack and change the settings. It really does piss me off though, laptop is perfectly good and I don't want to buy a cr*ppy one but I also dont have the $$ for a decent one. I got my hopes up when I saw a Envy 17 3D on the HP website, 1600. I forgot it was USD. only one supplier in NZ too, 3500. ouch. i'd love to build a desktop (that would be easy here) but I need the portability. |

| 1168564 | 2011-01-11 11:07:00 | I got half way thru getting the whole thing disassembled . I couldn't get the whole thing done and gave up . I wanted to try reseating as the laptop did work once after I took the HDD out, unusual if the CPU was broken . I also wanted to check the thermal paste condition . Last time it was repaired I asked them to reapply it since it was still running hot but I don't think they did it . Do you know where there are disassembly instructions for dv5 1009ax? I can't find any good ones . I found one for recyclers but it didn't help . Cheers :pf1mobmini: |
