1167977 2011-01-07 09:47:00 Running W7 .

Seems to start - but doesn't; no screen; keyboard seemingly disabled; movie control buttons illuminate; DVD drive noises heard . . .

Best guess
Inadequate hard drive free space, as lots of system fonts were added, as well as styles and brush add-ons for photoshop . Estimate HDD about 80% full, probably standard sized HDD as supplied with such models .

Scenario
Was running OK on mains power; Photoshop open and working; visitors arrived; presume laptop went into sleep or hibernate mode; when returned to laptop - it was seemingly frozen . Powered down by holding down the [start] button .

A range of re-start options tried, with mains, battery, even after removing the battery; leaving off for 20 minutes . Nothing!

Got any ideas, forumites?

1167978 2011-01-07 10:27:00 Drop in a bootable CD, anything will do, a windows CD, or Linux Live CD - see if the DVD drive will boot it.

This is only to test out the Display, Keyboard/Mouse

1167979 2011-01-07 11:19:00 Does it have an Nvidia graphics chip by any chance? CYaBro (73)

1167981 2011-01-08 23:54:00 Did you try safe mode? Wanuitech's suggestion is the best way to test the display/kb/mouse though. Blam (54)
1167982 2011-01-13 22:46:00 :thanks I do appreciate all the helpful insights!

CYaBro: yes, I think so.

Blam: It wont boot into any damn mode!
No BIOS beeps, either, even with the RAM removed.

Wainuitech: wont do it with either linux or mini XP

Feersumendjinn: I've passed the laptop on to a local tech.
That was yesterday, so I've e-mailed him the links.
Did enjoy the cooking-the-laptop stories! :illogical

1167983 2011-01-14 11:20:00 Damn. E-mail from Techie saying the CPU is
cooked. Possibly because of fan failure.
:badpc:
Anyone selling a laptop (not HP or comcrap!)
that will meet the system requirements (secondlife.com) for
second life?
