1122828 2010-07-28 12:30:00 I would have no problem with Police being armed but I would want that to be more senior Police rather than those just out of training school.

As things stand at the moment front line Police have to contact somebody in the back room or com centre to ask permission to chase somebody or whatever. If I was out there I should be depended upon to do my job. What do I do Prefect? Shoot the scumbag or phone up the boss to ask if I can do that while your Wife is being raped?

That boss may have to ring his boss and etc.

While I'm on the comms another person might take me down as well.

What do we want? Police that are out there doing a job or should they spend all their time learning how to be PC?

1122829 2010-07-28 19:24:00 The police in NZ have had an abysmal record for recklessly discharging firearms Waiatara and Western Springs for two off the top of my head.

Also the case I think in Christchurch where they were trying to shoot a dog, there were 3 or 4 officers taking pot shots at the dog in a residential street.
and with no regard to public safety.

1122830 2010-07-28 19:56:00 One thing I always thought would end these types if incidents would be if cops worked in pairs. Alot of small towns have only one cop. rob_on_guitar (4196)
1122831 2010-07-28 22:19:00 If the cops carried guns people would respect them a bit more.

If they killed a couple of low lifes to get the message across that would be OK in my book.

A few judges need to be assaulted and robber first.

How can you teach respect in schools anymore - the cat is out of the bag.

Nicely put Diggers.!

Another reason cops should be very restricted with gun availability, maybe the NZ police force is the most incompetent in the world.

Why did the officer approach the car alone in the first place ? knowing that they had just been on a major crime spree and there was more than one person in the vehicle. It wasn't like he was pulling someone over for speeding.
And yes they should work in pairs and get more support from the powers above.

Also this from the latest police pursuit review.

Differential response model
This is a project currently being undertaken by the Operations Group. It introduces a
three tier operational response model to critical incidents. If approved, one component
of this model is the introduction of critical response vehicles (CRVs) in metropolitan
areas. CRVs are based on the Armed Response Vehicle concept used in the UK; they will
comprise of two officers and be equipped with firearms and ballistic body armour, and
their primary purpose will be to respond immediately to calls for service where weapons
are believed to be involved. As the number of incidents involving weapons increases in
New Zealand, there is a likelihood that the number of pursuits involving armed
occupants may increase. CRVs may provide crucial assistance in these incidents and
their place in the pursuit policy will need to be addressed in due course, depending on
the outcome of the project. RPS will continue to work closely with the Operations Group
on this issue.
