1168798 2011-01-11 03:17:00 Hi all,
I've got a friend who purchased an eBook via Whitcoulls online. When he downloaded the eBook, it was an "ASCM" file and required Adobe Digital Reader to be installed. Once this was installed, the eBook opens fine on his PC. However, he now wants to copy/move this eBook to his eReader device (purchased from DSE) which is connected via a USB port. I've had no experience in regards to ACSM files or any of the Adobe apps.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this eBook to a PDF file so I can move to his eReader device? :illogical

Thanks

1168799 2011-01-11 04:34:00 I think you will find that it cannot be done. The DRM is pretty tight on purchased ebooks. He will be able to do it with ones that are in the public domain. CliveM (6007)
1168800 2011-01-11 05:41:00 Try Calibre (calibre-ebook.com) - it may or may not work--- from their FAQ section:
Most purchased EPUB books have DRM. This prevents calibre from opening them. You can still use calibre to store and transfer them to your e-book reader. First, you must authorize your reader on a windows machine with Adobe Digital Editions. Once this is done, EPUB books transferred with calibre will work fine on your reader. When you purchase an epub book from a website, you will get an ”.acsm” file. This file should be opened with Adobe Digital Editions, which will then download the actual ”.epub” e-book. The e-book file will be stored in the folder “My Digital Editions”, from where you can add it to calibre.

It may work, I know SWMBO just brought some online - Not to sure where from - and this did convert them, but they may not have been protected.

1168801 2011-01-11 06:39:00 Calibre does do a lot of stuff not sure about DRM though, Wainui and I spent a few days emailing backwards and forwards about it. I have Calibre on my netbook and use its reader app to read ePub and PDF and even to convert between formats I think it even converts Amazon format but not if its got DRM gary67 (56)

I notice I can still read all my paper books just fine....

ASCM isn't the filetype of the ebook, it's simply a trigger for Adobe Digital Editions to launch and download the real thing.

Unless your ebook reader supports Adobe Digital Editions DRM (this is the DRM system used by almost every vendor except Amazon, including Whitcoulls, for ePub & PDF files), you will not be able to open this book directly on the reader at all. If this (www.dse.co.nz) is the reader you're talking about, then you're out of luck.

What you can do is strip the DRM from the file you have - this should result in something that your reader can open. I'd rather not go into details as to how - this skirts rather close to the forum rules on piracy - but the tool you're looking for is called 'inept'.

Calibre cannot open DRM-protected files at all, although it can catalogue them and transfer them to / from your reader. Note that even if it is used to transfer the file to your reader, you still won't be able to open it unless your reader natively supports ADE DRM, which it sounds like yours does not.

1168807 2011-01-12 01:40:00 Sorry if this is a bit OT, but have you noticed that most big sites e.g. google, Amazon won't download current books to the Pacific because of copyright problems? This is darned frustrating especially when you read the list of allowed countries with names you've never heard of and can't pronounce!!

Wish this could be sorted as it severely limits my ebook (epub or Amazon) pursuits.
