1168480 2011-01-10 05:13:00 My dad's computer has been playing up the last few weeks, he can't use IE for long because it just crashes (gives that annoying message saying Send/Don't Send), every half hour or so there's a similar message just pop up saying Antispyware service (or something along those lines) has crashed, with the Send/Don't Send, and also every half hour or so a pop up dialogue in the bottom right corner that says Microsoft Security Essentials service is not running, and have to click the button to start it again... half an hour later it happens all over again.

I though it might be a virus, but after a number of different virus scans (local and online), spyware scan, and malwarebytes scan... still no difference in behaviour.

So dad got me to reformat/reinstall, and before I did this I took out his old HDD and put in a different one.

After a fresh install of Windows XP Pro Sp3, the same thing still happens.

Any ideas? He's had the PC for a few years now with no problems at all until a month or two back. Is it hardware? Or something wrong with MSE or an update?

Thanks,
Mike.

1168481 2011-01-10 05:44:00 Did you install IE8? Try another browser, does it crash? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1168482 2011-01-10 05:48:00 It happened with IE6 (installed with XP) and also after I installed IE8. Using other browsers works fine, but the Antispyware and the MSE issues still occur.

1168483 2011-01-10 07:13:00 Does it show the name of a file / dll file in any of these programs that crash? Post a HJT log. We'll see whats in it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1168484 2011-01-10 09:18:00 IE hasn't crashed yet :) but I've attached a SS for each of the other two messages. I'll go find HJT and post a log now...

1168485 2011-01-10 09:44:00 Oops I was wrong - I installed IE8 before the reformat (didn't help) and I haven't installed it again yet so still running IE6 now.

1168486 2011-01-10 10:07:00 I would kill / uninstall windows search

You can tick this then tick fix checked. Or delete it with ccleaner

1168487 2011-01-10 12:40:00 I would kill / uninstall windows search

Wife has somewhat similar problem on her laptop. Can't find 'windows search' in Add/Remove Programmes. How can I tell if it's installed/running and if so how do I kill/uninstall?

1168488 2011-01-10 21:28:00 Thats a good question. I've never installed windows search. So dont know if it appears in add/remove programs or not. Look in event viewer Mike (start/run type eventvwr.msc). Look under application, for the errors. And see if it shows the name of any files, that maybe causing the crashes. Disable auto restart. Since, if the entry in startup appeared, it maybe a BSOD? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1168489 2011-01-10 21:33:00 Windows search came in on the windows update I think?

I'll take a look at the event viewer now.

Cheers,
Mike.
