1169956 2011-01-15 22:29:00 Hi all.

I recently replaced three burst capacitors on this card (if interested I had a previous thread on my mis-behaving card). The operation was at least temporarily successful with the graphics problems disappearing.

This morning there was a single "pop" when I turned on the PC and while the PC seemed to boot ok there was no signal to the screen.

Removed card, inspected both it and the MB for problem capacitors and all seem fine (no bulging or residue showing), no sign of scorched components. Dropped old card (X1300) in and it works fine.

Checked the continuity on thex1950 card's capacitors, replaced card and booted up. This time the signal worked but there's coloured streaks and pixelated images - during boot up there was coloured boxes with symbols and SSS's appearing.

Any clue as to the "pop" and what may be causing the problems?

I suspect the card is finally dead but the cap replacement was good experience at least.

Cheers!

1169957 2011-01-16 02:39:00 A not dissimilar problem encountered with a Radeon 1650. A new PX6600 card with 3 yr guarantee costs about $73. PENTIUM (426)
1169958 2011-01-16 04:09:00 Kind of pointless. When new you get a 3 yr warranty, after that who cares, it's old tech. pctek (84)
1169959 2011-01-16 04:38:00 What were the replacement capacitors? If not high quality and low ESR you may have caused more problems... Agent_24 (57)

Thanks for the advice- I was looking at a "cheap" new card but have been struggling to find anything near in spec to the X1950pro to replace it (I see from benchmark scores that PX6600 is a much lower performing card - something like 250 vs 850) .

Main problem is the X1950pro only barely squeezed in the case and that was with a "slight" re-arrangement of the cooling fins . Every other example I've seen of the card on Trademe has a casing over the fan or is even bigger than my card . My Dell case has a dirty great wind tunnel cowling over the heatsink that makes putting in a larger card unfeasilble .

Yeah, but it was better than any other card I can get to fit in there:thanks

Rubycon. Sourced them from Badcaps.net in the states on the basis they are the experts. I'm confident they were the right specs as well.

1169962 2011-01-16 08:47:00 Shouldn't be a capacitor issue then, if you replaced them all.

I would post the problem on Badcaps forum then, if you haven't already.

Change the case.

1169964 2011-01-16 20:49:00 Did you take proper anti-static precautions and ground the soldering iron tip etc when changing the caps? It is very easy to damage semiconductor components when doing any soldering on a PC board and they don't always die straight away.

Cheers

1169965 2011-01-16 21:02:00 I have an older asus HD4850 that is only a short single slot card that fits almost anywhere. Not sure about availability but thought I'd mention it. dugimodo (138)
