| 1124465 | 2010-08-06 03:02:00 | Ken my point was that nobody could voluntarily sign up with the guarantee that they would be sent to Vietnam so its incorrect to say that all the Kiwis who served in Vietnam had joined for that specific reason. Guys, guys, guys. As one who did serve for a long time in an active defence force (conscripted) there is one thing that I think everybody except the ones that also served forgets : if you are trained up to do something in any army you are itching to go and use it. My parents knew the risks when I went, luckily I got off with a few wounds, but that's part of the job - in those days to keep the country/world "Commie-free" sarel |

| 1124466 | 2010-08-06 07:09:00 | I suspect that you would be first to the beach with the white flag saying " Welcome invaders, Just leave me and my kind alone and we will support you" Ah! Another armchair warrior. One thing I've learned about war is that most people who have seen active service as conscripts don't talk about it. Maybe the volunteers are a different matter. Wonder what happened to the guy on here who wanted to join the US Marines? |

Communism was indeed something to fear (i.e. the form of Communism by the USSR, China, etc). After WW2 there was a perception that Communists could destroy Western democracy and freedom (flawed as it was). This fear later prevailed in the Domino Theory (en.wikipedia.org), which most liberals disregarded, but it seems that Korea, Laos and Malaysia are examples of dominoes. |

| 1124471 | 2010-08-06 19:35:00 | angry said "Reinforced by the no nuclear ships communist legislation that our economy is still suffering for." Evidence please. 25 years after "RED hairy legged helen" rammed through that legislation, while lange was on a ship to the islands with no working radio telephone. We STILL DO NOT HAVE A FREE TRADE AGREMENT WITH THE US unlike our ANZUS brothers across the tasman. We still HAVE NOT recoverd the british goodwill, lost to that communist legislation. Loss of goodwill in defence with MAJOR and NESSECARY allies always effects trade, either directly, or indirectly. NZDF lost all of its purchasing discounts/aid and effective millitary assistance, the day after that legislation was passed. The increase in cost caused by this has been borne by the taxpayer. We have NO AIRFORCE because we can not afford one without the FAVOURED NATION purchasing discounts/millitary aid to allies (From the US). All of these thing had a NEGATIVE effect on our internall economy, sucking funds from other areas: education, health, transport infastructure, ect which are part of the tax merry go round. When tax dollars have to be used to cover unnessecary and unplanned for cost increases in overseas purchases. The funds must come out of the merry go round which should have been helping feed the internall economy. Our recover from the 87 crash was slowed by the trade negativity in the us, and increasing resistance to our primary products there. We then had the mother of all budgets in 91. Why? because hairy legs and her communist mates had spent every cent in the cupboard and then ten times more that we didnt have. This was COMPOUNDED by the negative trade attitude in: washington, london, and brussels (Because Britain stopped fighting the french for us) that hairy legs and here commie and queer mates had given NO CONSIDERATION WHAT SO EVER TO, when they rammed through the no nukes bill. Yes our economy recover at the end of the ninetys, (just in time for hairy legs and her queer mates to reap all the bennifits, and then blow all of the surplus and then some. From the largest economic growth this nation has had since WW II. Ensuring there was nothing but bills and debt when national took power) but think how much stronger it would have been "before" that recovery, if not for the commie nukes bill. National economys do not allwas react quickly to changes, some small changes can and do have long term effects both ways. The beuracrats do not wish to play with analasis of this issue because most of them are "Helens Hairy Legged girl's" or under their controll. Key has had too many other problems on his hands to carry out his intention of bringing the hairy legged ones to book, they are still a great power in the beuracracy, not bringing them to heel by now, will cause him great problems with negative leaks going into the election. |

If this is in reply to me: the yes so would I. Your origonal comment changes tack half way through ""The part that really gets me is that the pacifists suggest you just lie down and take it which I would prefer not to do. The likes of the bk T suggest it is none of our business so stay out of it and that attitude is what leads to a number of children ending up bruised, battered or dead due to the actions or inactions of so called care givers." " Its disjoint and a topic shift, which is why i ask what you where/are trying to say. If I see I will react, but it is not my place to "pry". In society I see these as 2 different forms of apathy, and 2 different apathetic groups. Anti war types generally tend to be big sticky beaks, and quiet reactive about any from of non conpliance or possible law braking. This is why we have so many NANNY STATE RULES now. |
