:)

1125647 2010-08-08 21:20:00 Well we get our cars from Turners b/c it is cheaper. They have all lasted us for years too. Less problems than dealers.

We find that a manual gearbox more expensive to buy at Turners.
Dad has driven a manual for 30+ years and now has a auto and wants a Mercedes for retirement :D

All of our cars and our extended family have auto cars now.
Umm .. sure, if we go to a less developed country they may have manual cars but if we bumped into someone outside they prob do the driving anyway. Some of the 1.5L rental cars from Avis are manual thou but any larger cars incl family sedans are auto. We don't rent cars overseas anyway. If you were into real 4WD then maybe, but they are more the hotel, tourist guides, CBD tourists. Driving in larger cities, public transport is better.

Don't believe it.

1125649 2010-08-08 21:40:00 We don't live 1hr away from the CBD or up steep hills or do fortnightly family trips away.

We never had a issue with the trans. Never did a trans oil changed either. Incl our v old Triumph or our Hillman that we bought at a private sale in the 90s, when people were driving Mazda 626's and Commodores. Then we had a 1.3L Mazda 323 from 1992 to 2010 just sold off recently. Incl also our more recently bought early 2000s cars.

1125650 2010-08-08 22:21:00 I would never buy an auto (until I'm at least 70 anyway) and think everyone should learn to drive in a manual, or at least the law needs to be changed so that if the full driving test is taken in an auto, you can only drive an auto until some type of manual test is taken that will lift that restriction on your license.

Getting hold of newer manual cars is getting harder and harder, (generalizing here) my theory is the the only people who can afford a new car now are older people and asians, who want auto rather than manual, even though a new manual is a few k cheaper. So we end up having a massive number of auto cars to not nearly as many manuals - look at the Mazda SP20 for example. The number of auto/tippy ones to manual is huge, and there is a price premium of several k for a manual one, even though the manual was actually cheaper when the car was new. If there was extra work and cost involved in getting a full manual license after getting an auto one, people would be more willing to learn in a manual, and this annoyance of newer cars being hard to find in manual might not be as bad.... :2cents:

Don't believe it either.

I would like to see a few mechanics back that up - I hear of autos and especially tippys costing upwards of $2500 to fix when they crap out, where it would be odd for a manual clutch to cost over around $1200 to replace, and even a whole gearbox for most jappas isn't going to break the bank.

x2 - one of the reasons my trans was so dear to fix was that it had to be cut open . . . . from memory it was $400+ just to weld it back up again .

Most manual boxes are much simpler internally, so will always be cheaper to fix . I'm pretty sure I read an article about auto vs manual a while back that said the reason that there's so few manual transmission cars around now was to do with the proliferation of front-wheel drive, and that in a matter of 10 years or so, the only manual cars you could buy would be luxury sports marques .

1125653 2010-08-08 23:50:00 I just bought a second hand car 2 days ago, but while shopping I was surprised at the amount of manuals on offer.
But cash and comfort dictated my choice this time around, ended up with a 99 holden vt, sweet deal, 2 grand and under 200kms, an offer I couldnt refuse even though the last time I owned a car single was a mustang.
But got to think of bubs and her gears too now...

1125654 2010-08-09 00:28:00 Pretty sure this is a bad thing aye. All people should have to learn how to drive in a manual imo.

That's a bit like saying all computer users should us DOS command line for everything..
