| 1124434 | 2010-08-04 03:36:00 | We should stay. When I was a grunt - over 20 years ago, I would have killed for the opportunity to meet interesting people and reconstruct them. |

Its their jobs, I loved every deployment I was on and I suspect they do too. Alot of my friends are over there and happy to put their training into practice. We all know/knew the risks, we didn't sign up for knitting lessons. Some of them talk on facebook while Im at work in the wee hours while waiting for the next patrol/sentry etc |

| 1124438 | 2010-08-04 08:03:00 | Perhaps bk T could phone Tim O'Donnell's father and tell him his son died for nothing. This in spite of the father saying his son died doing what he loved at a press conference today. |

| 1124440 | 2010-08-04 12:03:00 | The USA and their allies are the root of all evil in the world along with Israel, according to the left, the greenies and all their fellow travellers. Surprising though it might seem, the United States, UK and to a lesser extent Australia do not wish to drain their national wealth, to participate in prolonged military action that is expensive in life and material for little or no national gain. They are involved in this and similar actions because Islamic terrorism is an ongoing threat to the freedoms and national lifestyle they espouse. It is conveniently overlooked that Afghanistan under the Talliban, gave refugue and support to Osama Bin Laden and Al Quaida, allowing them to run a major network of terrorist training camps, and export Islamic terrorism not only to the middle east but into the heartland of the Western Alliance. It was in response to the attack of 11 September on New York and Washington, that lead to the decision to take on the Talliban and Al Quaida head on in Afghanistan. Islamic Terrorism is not just a problem for the USA, it is a threat to the liberties and way of life of all free countries in the Western World, New Zealand included, although NZ would be about the bottom of Al Quaida's action list. If we wish to enjoy the benefit of our National Security being underwritten by the United States, and predominently paid for by the American taxpayer, the very least that New Zealand can do is to stand alongside the USA and it's allies in this struggle, even if it is only a token effort. That is why New Zealand forces are in Afghanistan, and it is why they should stay there, even though these recent losses will probably not be the last. If the enemy get the idea that all they have to do is inflict a few casualies on NZ troops to produce a national clamour for NZ to withdraw, then it would be logical to target them to achieve that end. |

It sums up the situation and to me it makes sense . The problem is that the military campaign by coalition forces has not been managed well at all (according to various sources, including military analysts) . If there were at least double the amount of coalition soldiers from when the campaign began the situation would most likely be different today . But then of course there is the huge problem of Pakistan giving refuge to a seemingly endless supply of fanatical fighters . And also there is the huge problem of Christian fundamental fanatics who have turned this into a holy war . Then there is there is the problem of corruption in the Afghan government . It is a bad bad situation and some idiots put the blame :illogical entirely on Obama . |

| 1124443 | 2010-08-04 21:57:00 | Yes. NZ army is voluntary, so are overseas missions. If they didn't want to go, they could have said no. The reality is our defence force is so small that, all of these people have to compete very hard for the seats, they work hard to get in to see the world and shoot a few people. They have worked very hard to get into the likes of the SAS, do you think they did it for the fun of it? You are right Cato. Personel in the armed forces are vthere by choise. Many of them sign up especially to serve overseas. Same applied to the Vietnam Conflict. all those guys were volunteers who signed up to go there. |
