We got "Saint Elmo's Fire" - which is a very crazy electrical glow all over the ship from the 'electrum' in the atmosphere. The whole ship had a green-red-blue glow to it on every outside surface. I swear that I could even hear it. Here's the ship I was on: upload.wikimedia.org |

It will feature a server-based computer system that will allow any crew member to do any role at any station. Let's hope they keep their Anti-Virus up to date. :D |

| 1124110 | 2010-08-04 18:16:00 | Looks like they got the plans and specifications from several types of vessel mixed up, but built it anyway . At least there is plenty of room for the deck chairs . She had originally been laid as a medium cruiser class, but the need for "Jeep Light Carriers" - smaller, fast attack-type carriers that was being pushed toward the end of WW-II came up while she was 'still in the ways' - and they converted her to a baby flat top, and renamed her the USS Saipan for the commemorative Naval Battle there . PIX: . wikipedia . org/wiki/File:USS_Saipan_CVL-48_1956 . jpg" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org We could run at 23 Kts all day and make enough water to run some water slides and aquatic park rides on the A Deck (that high flat area where aircraft usually took off and landed) . We had two 1200 Lb HP boilers and another pair of aux 800 pounders for other uses . There was a lot of horses under her decks! Later converted at an AGMR (which my recruiter told me was an Attack Guided Missile Recovery Vessel - whatever THAT was!) she had those tall radio masts installed on the main deck that made it impossible to land any aircraft at all . My job was to "Slush The Cables" which isn't too far removed from "NARFLE THE GARTHOK" since I had to climb up the inside of those tall masts that were hollow and then when they got too narrow, open a door and go outside on the exterior ladder and climb the rest of the way up to the mast cables that stretched from mast to mast . Then I hooked a boatswain's chair over the cable and as I slid across from one mast to the other, scrape off the grease and graphite that I had put on it a month ago and replace it with new grease and graphite sealer . If you look - you can see that they were pretty high . . ussarlington . com/agmr/gmr14 . jpg" target="_blank">www . ussarlington . com That 'booth' there is our Sat-Com unit . They have all three of them passed away now . . ussarlington . com/Captain%20welcomes%20Nixon%20and%20staff . jpg" target="_blank">www . ussarlington . com Cmdr Edwards and I became fast friends since he had been the XO of my dad's submarine during their war patrols and the 60 hour depth charging in Tokyo Harbor, planting mines for the planned US Invasionary Insertion of Japan - when they got caught by the Japanese harbor patrol boats and were forced to go 'silent boat' for all that time sitting on the bottom of Tokyo Harbor with no open compartment doors or lights or air circulation all that time . Several submarine crewmembers died during that depth charging and the rest went to Camp Dealy in Guam ( . combinedfleet . com/HA-51 . jpg" target="_blank">www . combinedfleet . com) for mental R&R - (where I saw the movie "Bullitt" with Steve McQueen on the same benches that my dad said he watched a Betty Grable movie on - the same movie every night) . They got a lot of free beer and food though . They surfaced at night and slipped out over the submarine nets and ran all the to Guam on the surface, afraid to be forced to submerge again for all the leaks they had . When they got out of Dealey, VJ -Day had happened . Ah . So much for reminiscing - my dad passed away on Aug 11th last year and that's coming 'round again in a few days . He retired as a Chief-Warrant Officer (CWO-III) - which I did not know until I saw his obit . He played close to the vest for all the things he saw and did during the war . Having become a member of The Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club and being afforded the title of "Brown Water" and "Blue Water" sailor, we got several doses of Agent Orange while we were in VietNam, and I got a triple dose when I was off-shipped to LBJ to work on some primary assault boats for the Marines . I ate in the General Mess and got a lot of 'indigenous' foods that were highly laced with the chemical . That's where my current medical issues emanated . . |

| 1124115 | 2010-08-05 02:30:00 | The news says we should be hitting the highest amount of this tonight, tomorrow and some left over on Friday (US dates) . Just remember that the southern areas get the same effects, although this article doesn't mention Upsidedown Land . Skywatchers at high latitudes could be in for a spectacular treat of northern lights, the aurora borealis, Tuesday and Wednesday: After a relatively quiet stretch, it appears the sun is ramping up its activity . The sun's surface erupted early Sunday, blasting tons of plasma (ionized atoms) into space . These atoms are headed toward Earth and could create a stunning light show in the process . "This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here early in the day on Aug . 4th," said Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics . "It's the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time . " The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, was spotted by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory , which captures high-definition views of the sun at a variety of wavelengths . SDO was launched in February and peers deep into the layers of the sun, investigating the mysteries of its inner workings . "We got a beautiful view of this eruption," Golub said . "And there might be more beautiful views to come if it triggers aurorae . " Views of aurorae are usually associated with Canada and Alaska, but even skywatchers in the northern U . S . mainland are being told they can look toward the north Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for rippling "curtains" of green and red light . |
