| 1169966 | 2011-01-17 02:35:00 | Change the case. Thanks pctek, unfortunately research shows putting a proprietry Dell MB in another case is more than a little chancy - possible but would need modding of the new case, not something I'd chance the warranty on. Did you take proper anti-static precautions and ground the soldering iron tip etc when changing the caps? It is very easy to damage semiconductor components when doing any soldering on a PC board and they don't always die straight away. Cheers Billy 8-{) I grounded myself but not specifically the soldering iron (gas run) so this may be an issue - next time, definitely! I have an older asus HD4850 that is only a short single slot card that fits almost anywhere. Not sure about availability but thought I'd mention it. Thanks, I'll look into it. Shouldn't be a capacitor issue then, if you replaced them all. I would post the problem on Badcaps forum then, if you haven't already. Might chalk it up to experience - or wait a few days until I'm less discouraged:D |

| 1169967 | 2011-01-17 11:44:00 | My Dell case has a dirty great wind tunnel cowling over the heatsink that makes putting in a larger card unfeasible. You could put a normal aftermarket fan on your CPU heatsink or a heatsink/fan assembly. |

Chop the damn thing off if necessary, biff in a couple of fans if there's any spaces and then give a big finger to the case when you get the opportunity to upgrade next. |

I will also look into this in conjunction with feersumendjinn's suggestion . Thank you also . |

| 1169970 | 2011-01-17 22:48:00 | Thanks pctek, unfortunately research shows putting a proprietry Dell MB in another case is more than a little chancy Is it proprietary? Sometimes they are, sometimes not. If not, do it. If it is, well I'd upgrade the whole thing. |

| 1169971 | 2011-01-18 09:47:00 | is the card AGP or PCIe? depending on the type you could try getting a different card which would possibly fit better, generally AGP slots tend to be higher up on the mobo rather than PCIe which is closer to the bottom. Best of luck to you. |

| 1169972 | 2011-01-18 18:20:00 | Is it proprietary? Sometimes they are, sometimes not. If not, do it. If it is, well I'd upgrade the whole thing. Everything I've read online indicates that it is but I'll do a physical check as well. The main issues appear to be that 1)the MB mounts may not line up and may have proprietary fixing clips 2)the cpnnector panel at the back is in a different place than non-Dell cases, so modifying the new case would be needed. But I will do some physical checks. Upgrade the whole thing? Mmmmmmm... that would be nice:D is the card AGP or PCIe? depending on the type you could try getting a different card which would possibly fit better, generally AGP slots tend to be higher up on the mobo rather than PCIe which is closer to the bottom. Best of luck to you. Thanks! It's PCIe. Basically a card needs to be single slot or low profile to fit. If I could get a card that's equivalent to my X1950pro to tide me over until I can afford the new case, MB, Ram and CPU I'd be happy! I was lucky with my card in that it didn't have any case over the fan and cooling fins so it could *just* squeeze in. |
