1169152 2011-01-12 09:27:00 Yeah, steam is legit. its a love hate for me though. Love the good price and availiablility 24/7, also the lack of hacking/cheaters online

Hate, the fact that the useless steam app has has to run in order to play, the slow downloads during peak traffic, the fact you cannot order physical media and various other things

1169153 2011-01-12 11:28:00 I like steam because it cuts out the price of buying physical discs, I bought left for dead 2 for about $25 when it was $90 in stores. And even if I lose my discs or they break (half life : blue shift), I can just download them off steam and use them on my original license.
I too thought it was sus at first (like gamespy... ugh) but it turned out to be pretty brilliant.

However I do recommend a few things.
1- update your games after you install them, and then if you don't want them to be automatically updated, right click it > properties > updates > do not automatically update this game.
2 - once they're updated, BACK UP YOUR GAMES. Either to a DVD or External HDD, you will want to do it for the sake of your bandwidth. Uninstalling steam uninstalls EVERY game you have, so either rename the steamapps folder when you uninstall or just keep backups. (which you do by right clicking a game > backup game files)

But I do find it annoying that you have to have steam running for any games to run, but meh.

And the only reason HL2 users got the updates was because the engine itself gets updated so any source games automatically update. Which is kinda annoying. But yeah.

1169154 2011-01-12 15:39:00 However, for those of us in places like NZ where broadband usage is still metered for most people, it is a pain to not know BEFORE buying a game how big the download will be.

Thank goodness I stayed on a torrent plan.

1169155 2011-01-12 18:55:00 Guys - thanks for all the feedback. Real helpful and exactly the info I was after. PF1 is a sweet place for this sort of help.

Cheers and thanks again

Because if it does I might start using it.

1169157 2011-01-13 03:59:00 Steam is legit and the prices are decent, much cheaper than at retail in New Zealand as long as you don't mind owning the game forever and the extra data usage, updates are not that frequent, so not being able to play a game because an update is downloading is pretty rare. 1169158 2011-01-13 06:49:00 You don't even need to download the game some times if you have a friend who has a disk copy of a steam game e.g counter strike,crysis,mw2 you can do a disk install. See here: support.steampowered.com icow (15313)

No it doesn't. We currently have two Steam content severs in NZ but you must belong to one of the ISP's who have them. Slingshot or Xnet.

Slingshot contains far more content (2/3) and pretty much allows for most games to be downloaded locally at full speed. Xnet will likely change between here and Australia.

Also for people complaining about needing Steam to play you may as well give up as most games are requiring internet to play to counter piracy (a losing battle may I add that only pisses off real gamers).

Yes. Killed gaming for 2 of my friends. One because he refused and the other because she's on dialup.

1169161 2011-01-14 22:19:00 And that's why you're forced to pirate games, if you want to play them without getting pissed off and having to download 5GB of patches every 5 minutes. Agent_24 (57)
