1125636 2010-08-08 09:04:00 Why? If they're never going to drive one, what's the point?

You never know.

Could list a bunch of scenarios but I'm sure you already know you might need to drive one some day.

Am saving up to do a manual conversion to my car...auto is nice, but it requires less attention and is no where near as fun to drive.

And nofam have you ever tried to brake with your left foot? Crazy how hard you end up pushing it without even meaning to.

Tho I'd imagine if you were missing a right leg you'd have a different opinion.

1125638 2010-08-08 09:13:00 Can't be all that surprised, it's the same thing with all technology (look at CPUs), gets cheaper and better over time.

The only thing I don't like about autos, is that you usually get less gears than the same model with a manual. Example; my car has a four-speed auto, the manual version is a five-speed. Sure, the ratios are adjusted, and it still does the job, but manuals are more... fun.

Tectronic (sp?) autos aren't a bad compromise. And, to be honest, in sport mode, my auto shifts faster than I ever could in a manual.

Edit: also worth note, is that, out of four cars owned by the three people in this house, three are autos; my car, a taxi, and a work ute (Holden).

1125639 2010-08-08 09:25:00 Dixon said that when she started as an instructor in 2004, 85 per cent of her students were learning to drive in a manual. Now it is only 35 per cent and 65 per cent are learning in automatics.Pretty sure this is a bad thing aye. All people should have to learn how to drive in a manual imo.

agree with you there.
what happens if you need to rush someone to hospital and the only car available is a manual?
its just laziness. the new car buyers are generally older buyers and a lot of imports are auto as they are from Japan.

you can't run start an auto, you can't tow them easily. can get run away down hills (tho newer auto's will change down a gear going down hills these days). auto gearboxes can over heat especially going at high speed up hills or towing etc. they generally so not like poor servicing.

mind you ones with "paddles" are fun to drive and handy when the @#$%$ auto won't change down a gear soon enough.

no problem with left foot braking an auto. handy to do when starting on steep hills.

the torque converter acts as another gear. most decent ones will have a lock up clutch which drops rpm a bit more and improves economy. bit of a common fix for some vehicles is to manually control the lock up clutch, so you can turn it on early and save fuel and lower the auto's temp.

1125641 2010-08-08 09:48:00 How? As long as you never, ever left-foot brake, your left foot only ever does clutch, or sits on the foot rest .

At least that's how I was taught, and I've never jumped on the brake .

I did recently forget to put the clutch in when coming to a stop however . . . .

Left foot goes for clutch, finds the side of the wide brake and hits that .

1125642 2010-08-08 09:50:00 Maybe they should look to the past and have a hybrid auto, stick shift like the Manumatic fitted to Morris Oxfords and Standard 10s. prefect (6291)
1125643 2010-08-08 17:38:00 When they talk about autos they are also including semi-Automatics as well. wmoore (6009)
1125644 2010-08-08 19:07:00 I like manuals. However, I now have an auto - but that's because Akld traffic is bad for clutches.

I usually use the right foot for the brake but not always. Never had a problem with the feet and braking switching between the auto and manual.

1125645 2010-08-08 19:59:00 I will always buy a manual over an auto. Too many autos have gearbox problems still that require $2000+ to repair where as to fix a manual costs half that amount. Nelson is hilly and auto's are a waste of time here gary67 (56)
