2010-08-04 09:59:00 | They deserve to have it pirated. What the hell is the point in paying for it if it's useless? Couldn't agree more, and if I had an unlimited data cap... well lets just say I wouldn't be subscribing to Sky anymore ;).

2010-08-04 23:52:00 | I was right ..... Thank you for your email. The only channels we schedule here at SKY are as follows: The Box; Vibe; SKY Movies 1, 2, Greats; SKY Sports 1, 2, 3, Highlights; Prime; Rugby Channel; and Arts. All other channels including ESPN are 'pass through' and provided direct through an international or local feed. We do not have any control over these channels or have any influence over their programme content as these are decided upon by the individual channel. Please be aware that ESPN comes direct off an international satellite and we receive ESPN's Pacific Rim Feed. We continue to upgrade our systems and source programmes and sporting events in wide-screen where possible, however please note this is a transitional process and we can not confirm an exact time frame as to when ESPN will go wide-screen on our service. We regret any inconvenience caused and we hope that you can appreciate that this is out of our control. We thank you again for taking the time to email us and we also hope that you will continue to enjoy all the great programming on offer here at SKY. Please continue to check the EPG (electronic programming guide) to confirm any changes and updates. Please feel free to contact SKY Television Customer Services on 0800 759 759 for further information, alternatively please respond via return email and we will endeavour to reply within 24 hours. With kind regards, They obviously have a very disconnected relationship with ESPN if they can't even talk to them about issues that make the programmes worthless. As a paying customer (and here I mean Sky NZ as a customer of ESPN) I would expect some communication/negotiation to take place if Sky NZ is being supplied a product it cannot in good conscience expect to be paid for by subscribers. <rant> Technically, I guess that the broadcast contravenes the CGA, as the programme is not fit for it's intended purpose. It's like pointing a camera at the centre spot on a football pitch and expecting viewers to guess the score as they cannot see the goals at each end. Or a golf tournament where only tee shots are shown. </rant> :2cents: Anyway, guess it's off to the cloud and see what I can find to download.

2010-08-05 02:09:00 | The only channels we schedule here at SKY are as follows: The Box; Vibe; SKY Movies 1, 2, Greats; SKY Sports 1, 2, 3, Highlights; Prime; Rugby Channel; and Arts. Hmm, then why do I see ads for local content and products on Discovery and Ci? If sky is, as they seem to be saying here, a feed-and-broadcast type channel, the least they can do to get the right feed!

2010-08-05 04:49:00 | It is only a problem with My Sky Decoders. A standard Sky decoder is OK, but a friend of mine had the same problems with screen ratios, he went back to the standard box. Sky acknowledge this problem, if you can get hold of the right person. I use a non Sky HDD + DVD recorder which is a bit of a hassle with setting recording times, but at least the picture is OK. | Peter H (220) | |
2010-08-05 06:57:00 | Hmm, then why do I see ads for local content and products on Discovery and Ci? If sky is, as they seem to be saying here, a feed-and-broadcast type channel, the least they can do to get the right feed! Hmm, funny you should say that, I emailed them a couple of weeks ago re why there were so many ads on Sky, this was their response: Thank you for your email and comments on the amount of advertisements/promos aired on our Network. Most television programmes which are produced today are either 20 or 40 minutes long; this means that to keep programme schedules for times slots that are manageable for both the company and customers, they are made into 30 or 60 minute programmes. This format is consistent through all television networks. The only channels we schedule here at SKY are as follows: The Box; Vibe; SKY Movies 1, 2, Greats; SKY Sports 1, 2, 3, Highlights; Prime; Rugby Channel; and Arts. All other channels are 'pass through' and provided direct through an international or local feed. We do not have any control over these channels or have any influence over their programme content as these are decided upon by the individual channel. These channels play out as they come through. It is up to each channel to decide how they use the time for ad breaks. They can sell the space to SKY, direct to an ad agency or use them for self promos. Ad content on free-to-air channels can be as high as 22 minutes per hour in peak time. Unlike free-to-air broadcasters, we never break into ads on our Movie Channels - the movie is shown uninterrupted just like you would watch a DVD or see a movie at a movie theatre. It is the revenue from these that allow the channels to buy or make more programming for SKY as we strive to give our customers the latest technology and enable us to bring in more channels. As a company we are aware of how frustrating ad breaks can be but we do try to keep these to a minimum. We thank you again for taking the time to email us and we hope that despite this you will continue to enjoy all the great programming on offer here at SKY. Please feel free to contact SKY Television Customer Services on 0800 759 759 for further information, alternatively please respond via return email and we will endeavour to reply within 24 hours. With kind regards, SKY Customer Services Team :groan:

2010-08-05 22:05:00 | ESPN is only shown in 4:3 - like a whole lot of other channels. It's not your TV, and it's not your Sky decoder - it is the broadcast. In this case it looks like they have buggered something up with the aspect ratio, but there is nothing you can do about it, and probably nothing Sky can do about it either. :( The TV should have a setting to stretch the picture across the entire screen to deal with 16:9 in 4:3 broadcasts. That would solve the aspect ratio problem.

The TV does have those settings. However, it is not going to show something that isn't there in the broadcast signal. All it will do is stretch the existing picture to a 16:9 format but with no extra content. |

2010-08-05 23:22:00 | What the hell is the point in paying for it if it's useless? Ummm.... because, you're consuming the content? If it's so useless, then why waste time pirating it? If it's worth pirating, then why not pay for it?
