| 1124098 | 2010-08-03 01:05:00 | Saw them once from Napier. Didn't know I had seen them until I read the paper the next night. It was just after sunset and the whole sky was red. You could see the stars shining through it. Actually thought it was a extended sunset. I was actually outside watching the airforce jets doing night landings at Napier Airport. This was over 20 years ago. :) |

In 2001 we observed them from Karamea...which is slightly north of Wellington, so if the sky is clear and you can get away from the city lights you 'might be lucky' :) Too much cloud in Chch tonight though :( |

| 1124104 | 2010-08-03 14:57:00 | When I was in the US Navy, we escorted/chased the Russian trawler, Gavriel E Sarychev off the coast of Los Angeles, California where it hugged the International Boundary all the way up past The Aleutians. When we got there the Northern Lights were running wild and they were so powerful that it was like daylight when they were brightest. |
