| 1169513 | 2011-01-13 06:07:00 | My christmas has come late; I've started at AMES I.T. academy and I'm LOVING IT!!! the a+ course may be more basic then I thought but I'm still learning ALOT :) Anyways; I'm getting course related costs and I'm looking at a system upgrade. Heres my current specifications: AMD Phenom 955 BE CPU 2GB Kingston DDR3 RAM Viewsonic 24" running at 1920x1080 9800GT LPE (usually Oc'd to 9800 ref spec.) Silverstone Elements 500w non-modular PSU Asus M4A77TD PRO Coolermaster CM-690 Original The games I play are: BF2 :P ... I have no internet at the moment HOWEVER I do also have a copy of GTA4 that although it works reasonably ok in XP environment it will NOT work without SEVERE stuttering in windows 7 ultimate 32bit(what I have) The upgrades I'm thinking of are 6950 and then bios flash to 6970 plus 4GB DDR3 ram (although I currently have 2GB I think im donating that to my mums new build) Also looking at a Logitech G35 (www.playtech.co.nz) All will be purchased in the next two weeks with CRC unless I find good reason to hold off. I realise that my selections a bit excessive and that others may have better upgrade paths for me SO my question is. Is the above stated going to be and EFFICIENT upgrade that can be 100% utilized by all hardware involved?!?! If not what do you recommend?!? My preference is playtech however I'm willing to try new etailers if the deals good enough - computerlounge I hear is good also costings... sorry for the random assortment of requests and whatnot :p oh-- also in future will get MW2 maybe BLKOPS Hawx?!?!? and one or two other good games... basically... whats you opinion. |

| 1169514 | 2011-01-13 06:36:00 | First thing that comes to mind: "windows 7 ultimate 32bit(what I have)" -- "plus 4GB DDR3 ram " A 32 Bit OS wont see all the RAM, basically (in round numbers) it will only use See 3GB - you would need to go to a 64bit OS to see the rest (or more) You got a budget? PS: Good you are enjoying the course. |

| 1169515 | 2011-01-13 07:04:00 | I can't see any reason not to go 64 bit unless you have driver issues with other hardware you might want to use . i hope you don't intend on purchasing w7 at retail prices :horrified Try here: . elive . co . nz/microsoft-windows-operating-systems . php" target="_blank">www . elive . co . nz I don't think they have w7 ultimate 64bit in stock but the 32bit OEM is a good $240 cheaper than retail (at least a DSE but that hardly counts :lol:) . IMO Elive has the best online comp store and the staff are great and helpful . If they don't normally stock w7 ult 64bit you could ask nicely and they might get it for you (maybe) :D . I'd max the memory as far as your mobo allows or at least 4-6gb . Then again 16gb is overkill (mobo max) . Would your psu need upgrading???? cause of new gfx card? |

| 1169518 | 2011-01-13 10:41:00 | What I would do: Get more RAM (4GB or higher) and upgrade to 64-bit Windows if needed Get faster graphics card, and maybe a new PSU for it if needed. Don't know what your hard drive(s) are but more of those are always useful. |

| 1169519 | 2011-01-13 17:25:00 | Yeah, I could get 64bit but I can't be bothered with the OS overhaul; maybe next time round I can obtain whichever OS is needed ;) Powersupply is 500w* sorry about that and yes I know about the ram limitation; but I'm not too concerned haha. --- Ok so. Is there any recommended downgrades in my selection?!?! or prefered supplier?!? |

| 1169520 | 2011-01-13 18:58:00 | I'd grab a 4GB RAM kit, a 650W or better quality-branded CPU, and depending on your budget a GTX460 1GB, 6850, 6950 or GTX570. All are quite capable gaming cards at 1920x1080 and the best value at their price points. | inphinity (7274) | ||
| 1169521 | 2011-01-14 01:09:00 | If you are doing IT courses, you will want various PC's for development as well as doing your gaming...If I were you, for 1080 rez is fine with a cheaper GTX460, and the money saved, get as much RAM as you can afford for VM's, along with x64 W7... PS: That 955 will hold back the 6950! |

I'm not doing much dev; we'll barely touch VM in A+ I doubt; all we use it for is Vista and 2000 in class... MCITP is another matter; however If I need more then 4GB ram I'll just pick up another module at that point (3+ months away) I'm thinking about a single 4GB DDR3-1333 module; as seen on playtech for $89. does anyone have comments on this?!? 460, 5850, 470 and 5870's is my range of graphics cards since the 6950(bio's flashed to 6970) will be CPU limited... what the recommendation. Also, although I believe you sol; can someone provide evidence to back him up!?? |
