1124201 2010-08-03 04:06:00 The Wall Street Journal over the weekend rolled out a multi-part series called “What they Know,” which looks at how marketers use the data collected from online users of the top U . S . websites .

Today the WSJ details how Microsoft, maker of Internet Explorer, the world’s most-used Web browser, decided against designing the latest version of its software to automatically prevent tracking tools from doing their job .

In the end, says the Journal, the profit motive won and “Microsoft built its browser so that users must deliberately turn on privacy settings every time they start up the software .

Really? Because Internet Explorer on Facebook says that their market share is 60.74%, which I can believe quite readily because it is the default browser in Windows, and many people have no reason to want to change.

1124206 2010-08-03 08:12:00 Visitors to W3 tend to be more browser choice 'aware' which will skew the results.

W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers.

These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.

Although searching further ... www.w3counter.com shows the stats that bevy121 quoted are gathered from 38,568 websites (June 2010).
