Were in NZ is a good place to view them?

1124091 2010-08-02 23:50:00 Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could wreck satellites, power and communications grids. Thats what the Movie Knowing (www.youtube.com) is all about (watched it in the weekend). Earth Toasted -- Population =0 wainuitech (129)
1124092 2010-08-02 23:57:00 I have only seen the southern lights once in my life. That was from Cape Terawhiti. Snorkbox (15764)
1124093 2010-08-03 00:01:00 Living in Dunedin as a kid, we quite ofter saw the "Southern Lights" dancing in the evening sky :) Zippity (58)
1124094 2010-08-03 00:06:00 Best place to observe the Aurora Australis is most probably Antarctica, but if you can't afford the trip then somewhere such as Lake Tekapo might be a good idea.

Ideally you need to be on high ground as far south as possible.

I have seen the Aurora Borealis from the north coast of Northern Ireland. Very eerie and well worth the trip to the coast.

BRIGHT LIGHTS: Aurora Australis, or the "Southern Lights", glow in the sky over the town of Glen Oroua near Palmerston North, on April 1, 2001, in the area's most dramatic display since 1989.
