1170704 2011-01-18 01:13:00 Got a really weird problem with an ACER Aspire 5100 Laptop .

It streams left square bracket keystrokes! I have found that pressing any other key will stop the stream and you can then type normally EXCEPT that the left sq bracket key does nothing, nada, zip .

After a while it will decide to start the streaming again, usually accompanied by noises from the spkrs (buffer overuns?? inappropriate activity??) .

I have got Vista to re-install the kbrd dvr (Launch Manager) but this didn't stop it .

Sounds a bit like a kbd replacement??

In addition, it also rapidly, and loudly, continuously beeps and stops during the POST . Pressing a key causes it to continue with the boot process after another few seconds of beeping . Not sure of the relevance, but it always stops just after "Video BIOS shadowed" and before "ATAPI CDROM" .

Either this machine has two problems or the key streaming is causing the POST beeping .

Easiest thing to do is tell the owner to take it to an ACER repair agent but any other suggestions suggestions helpfully received!

1170705 2011-01-18 01:26:00 Faulty keyboard (stuck/faulty key).

Only 1 way to confirm it: new keyboard.

1170706 2011-01-18 03:42:00 Yep, looks like it. New kbd 75% of new laptop?? Or only half? Perhaps I am too cynical.

Tried to disable the faulty kbd and just use a USB one as a test but don't seem to be able to disable the std one.

1170707 2011-01-18 03:52:00 keyboards are usually easy to get at (well at least on HP laptops) get hold of the service manual from somewhere to find the instructions. Usually its a few screws on the bezel (from underneath) then the bezel sohuld come away.

After that its a few screws on the kb and the ribbon cable to remove and the old one is out. reverse procedure for the new one

1170708 2011-01-18 07:41:00 That's absolutely right - checked the manual. But, where to get a new one? linw (53)
1170709 2011-01-18 07:48:00 Acer (www.acer.co.nz) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1170710 2011-01-18 07:57:00 Wouldn't bother with acer YET -- Replaced one late last year (Keyboard - Different Model) - Acer quoted Approx $500 WTF:eek:

Ring Dove Electronics in Christchurch 03 338 4722 Ask for the service department - They used to be the NZ Acer repair agents - got one from them --- Forty Five ($45)

They do have a 0800 number, but I cant find it, Wgtn branch will give it to you.

1170711 2011-01-18 08:18:00 Thanks, WT. Had a look around and find Raytechnz have them for $60 on TM. Amazon have them for $9.30!! Easiest route is to get the $60 one I guess. linw (53)
1170712 2011-01-18 08:56:00 I hate Amazon. Every time I find something that I want to buy they tell me they can't ship it outside USA.

eBay is much better.

1170713 2011-01-18 09:10:00 Yea, that stinks. Try to buy popular ebooks - same problem.

Anyway, have got the old kbd out (easy) and ordered a new one from Giga Computers. Auckland. Cost $51.75 incl postage. Hope that fixes the problem!!!!
