1170114 2011-01-16 20:19:00 Does anyone know anything about the Sandy Ridge CPU? I have been reading in various forums about how wonderful it is. Some reckon it is the best ever.
I would like to know how a $500 cpu is better than a $2,000 one. How a quad core running at 2.4 is better than a hex core running at 4.2.

1170117 2011-01-16 21:10:00 These are 32nm tech, as apposed to (40nm?) Nehalem, therefore the TDP envelope has given more headroom for clocking.....Anandtech.com has SB at 5Ghz on AIR!! SolMiester (139)

LOL, the price is better straight away. My OC'd Four Core i7 rates higher than most 1500 buck cpu's. And it STILL gets blown outta the water by the new sandy bridges, only stink thing is there dual channel memory, i want to sell my Mobo And Chip and Upgrade YESTERDAY, having said that though, the new x68 should be due soon. Quad channel mmmmmm.

But yeah, all in the Manufacturing process, my i7 uses a hell of alot less power and generates a hell of alot less heat. At 4.1ghz 1 1/2 hours of prime95 max temp 86 celc, compared to 3.6 (i5) 97 Celc, and both processors are 45nm, so 32nm should be tasty

If you don't mind the built-in DRM.

The technology known as Intel Insider does one thing and one thing only. It protects movies delivered from service providers that are specifically using Intel Insider to protect their content. It has to be enabled on the service provider side.
The only people that will be negatively affected are those who wish to pirate content from services that support Intel Insider.
Intel Insider in no way affects any other new or existing media. It does not matter if you buy from iTunes, use home movies, or buy from a CD store, rip from vinyl, or from an 8-track, or bit-torrent. Intel Insider will not touch it.The FULL story to DRM (blogs.intel.com)

Its what they are not saying that bothers me.

1170122 2011-01-17 07:51:00 The only thing that bugs me about Sandy bridge is you can only overclock the Turbo mode not the base clock. I know a number of people have experienced the odd issue getting turbo to ramp up with certain apps in very similar Intel notebook technology. Already seen the odd SB thread complaining about the lack of turbo in certain games/apps (one debate is the CPU doesn't need it, not convinced either way just prefer it ramped up)

Beyond that gripe Sandy bridge has amazing overclocks and is the fastest I7 platform clock for clock replacing the old 1156 platform and rendering little point to buying 1366.

Because of the lack of base clock control I would be waiting for the 1366 replacement socket2011 later this year to go I7. I suspect that will have base clock control.

oh and lastly as above Intel should stay out of any DRM, we want processors not a grand overlord.

1170123 2011-01-17 07:54:00 I'm just hoping that the price of some CPUs will go down for us lesser mortals that can't afford I7 anything. Snorkbox (15764)
