2010-08-11 15:01:00 | Each year, the Earth passes through the debris of a comet called the Swift-Tuttle . These debris burn up in our atmosphere to form what we see as meteors or shooting stars . The Perseid meteor shower is at its peak during mid-August, with the peak on the night of August 12 and morning of August 13 in 2010 . During a peak, at least 5060 meteors can be observed during each hour . Considered the best and brightest meteor show of the year by many, it's a great opportunity to go outside and check out nature's own dramatic show . | 1126694 | 2010-08-11 17:33:00 | Thanks for the reminder SJ. I have yet to be in a position to experience any of the meteor showers and this morning is no exception as will the next few nights be too. With early morning being the best time for viewing we have the usual frost and fog.Frustrating. | tut (12033) | |

2010-08-11 22:55:00 | For observers in the Southern Hemisphere, the Perseid radiant never climbs above the horizon, which will considerably reduce the number of Perseid meteors you are likely to see. Nevertheless, on the night of maximum, it is possible to see 10-15 meteors per hour coming up from the northern horizon. | AvonBill (11358) | |

I always thought this to be a northern hemisphere phenomenon, and on that basis, haven't paid too much attention to it. From your comments, can I assume it's going to be a non event here (local weather considerations aside)? |

2010-08-12 05:38:00 | Wow! We is gettin' hit by these in the thousands! It's night here and clear skies - that's prolly a big reason.

2010-08-12 05:44:00 | The original movie suggested that salt (specifically sea) water killed triffids, but the book suggested fire was better. Stock up, Joe. Mind you if you're watching the meteors now, it's a moot point because it's probably too late... :D
