If you need to purchase a version of Microsoft Windows instead of using a copy you had lying around, it is usually cheaper to buy a brand name PC because they can buy windows for next to nothing. You do get better quality by building for yourself though.

True, I forget about that. I have been using the same XP that I got with the Warehouse machine every time I upgrade or rebuild. (Another reason I liked that PC, it came with a genuine physical XP CD without any preinstalled crap, and a proper key, no VLK\OEM or other weird stuff like Dell\HP like to give you)

(but of course you can do the same thing yourself if you buy Windows separately, so you only have to buy Windows once, it's still cheaper if you use it over several upgrades.)
