1126624 2010-08-12 05:09:00 How long ago was that though? Forty years, maybe? :p

Oh ye of little faith. It was about 9 years ago. I would have been in my mid to late 50's. I hope that image doesn't do too much damage...

If you can still get to Welcome Flats, you aren't decrepit yet!

Actually that one was a really cruisy trip, because I had the use of the Warden's quarters for three nights, with its own heating, hot shower etc. And best of all, no snoring from the lower classes in the main accommodation. I had contacts at the time!

1126625 2010-08-12 08:04:00 Hopefully we will be the only party in there at this time of year and since we are moving through it will be all good. Should be some good pics when I get back. The drive is not that bad I go as far as Hokitika for work fairly regularly at the moment so the driving isn't an issue gary67 (56)
1126626 2010-08-12 10:10:00 If you haven't been there before (and perhaps you don't need this warning anyway), there are reasonably significant sections of the track where you are walking up the river bed on stones that are very icy in the morning at this time of year. Just take care as you go!

There was quite a major slip up the river that took out quite a section of the track, and a kind of hairy traverse across the slip face. I am not sure what they have done about it, but no doubt that has been sorted by now (as much as you could ever sort that face).

That track has got the uncanniest final section when you are coming back to the road. Apparently everyone talks about it. You can see what you think is the road and the carpark area, but it is a dispiritingly long way after you first see what you think is your destination! It plays psychological games with you.

Have a wonderful time - it is one of the best places I have been to. My son has done a lot of work up that valley, and loves it, as does my daughter in law. Feeling green with envy...

1126628 2010-08-12 10:44:00 When I was last there, some young Yank no-hoper turned up without any food. He just expected there would be someone there cooking for all who turned up! Or so he said, as he bludged kai off everyone who had carried theirs in... John H (8)
