If you are going to use the I5, or I7 CPU's, double check what you are getting when you get the motherboard.
The new Series 2 are out - 1155 CPU's : Video about them from intel (blogs.intel.com)

Intel Core i5 2300 2.8 GHz 6M LGA1155 Processor
Intel Core i5 2400 3.10 GHz 6M LGA1155 Processor
Intel Core i5 2500 3.30 GHz 6M LGA1155 Processor
Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30 GHz 6M LGA1155 Processor
Intel Core i7 2600 3.40 GHz 6M LGA1155 Processor
Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40 GHz 8M LGA1155 Processor

While they have the same I5 and I7 markings and "Intel Core", their sockets are different. The current ones are socket 1156, the new ones 1155, and they are different. This page shows the difference (www.zdnet.com)

Socket 775 Boards are being phased out rather quickly, in fact its getting harder all the time to get them.

It's way much easier than 'learning' to ride a bike. :)

1170014 2011-01-16 05:18:00 Hi Foxy,
I put one together last March,my first.
I found the biggest problem was deciding what to use !
Apart from that it just flew together.Bit disappointed it was so easy!!

Take your time, you get to enjoy it more :D

Also while I remember, don't forget to tidy up the cabling - there's nothing worse than starting up a PC for the first time only to find an unused Molex connector hitting the CPU fan.

1170016 2011-01-16 05:38:00 I think they are overall easier these days with plugin PSU, the hardest thing for me are the wires the mobo and that you need to thermal paste the cpu.

The 386 days we had a controller card and a video card, if i wanted to build a cheap system now i just go with builtin video.

Compared to the AMD 775 (?), I think it's the same. We had builtin video, thermal paste we just used the OEM one, the adhesive thing.... PSU was ATX so plug and go...

1170017 2011-01-16 05:43:00 If you can build a Socket 939 you can build new stuff too.

All the AMD CPUs since 939 are almost exactly the same, bar pin count.

As Speedy said, LGA from Intel is a bit different but not difficult.

Graphics cards etc are still PCI-E.

1170018 2011-01-16 06:59:00 Graphics cards etc are still PCI-E.

The graphics card is about the only expansion card in most PCs these days; PCI cards are generally used for more "obscure" features such as wireless networking in a desktop, as most, if not all, motherboards have integrated everything :p

1170019 2011-01-16 09:46:00 Yeah, remember the days of everythin on seperate ISA cards, and the darned interrupt juggling that was required. Dial-up modem card, sound card, network card, and jumpers to set the interrupts.
It feels like such a luxury to have them all on the mobo right from the start, and no interrupts to worry about.

Agree 100% with earlier comments - it's easier than ever to build, with choosing the bits being the most demanding part of the whole exercise.

Read the manual and you should be cruizing through the job.
The ASUS mobo I used recently for myself had integrated grpahics with DX10 capabilities - goes ok on most modern games too, albeit with the anisotropic and textures wound down a bit (close to being on a par with the DX9.0c card on the previous rig). I'll put of adding a dedicated gfx card till the games get even more demanding and the cards get even better/cheaper.

1170020 2011-01-16 10:34:00 It's easy. As pcuser42 (god knows why he keeps changing his name:rolleyes:) the hardest part is connecting the front panel connectors.

First time I built my PC however, I bent two pins on a socket 478 CPU - a $110 mistake!

1170021 2011-01-16 10:42:00 I sometimes find connecting the USB headers a pain too if they are not in a block. Snorkbox (15764)
