1126713 2010-08-11 22:09:00 Both HP and Dell have advanced replacement on their monitors, so it doesn't cost you anything to send the dud one back.

Which suggests that they are aware that a good percentage of their equipment fails....

I've had forward replacement of my monitor, CDROM and HD (laptop). Incl a used laptop I imported from the States. But since, it's been running to close to 10yrs. It does the job. Had 3 other used laptops without warranty, IBM, Tosh, and no issues for 3yrs.

I think that is fantastic. I do tell picky people to get a custom PC but for many of those who just go onto Facebook, listen to Mp3 and watch movies and to their school work or job work on it or their finance or write a letter, I just tell them to get a cheap custom made one but if you really want get a supermarket PC. Sometimes a custom made PC can be more pricey. Some may of thrown away the boxes and cannot send it back, they may have to pay $50 courier. Me to pay money to send the junk back to them ... hey great service.

1126715 2010-08-11 22:31:00 Five years ago my Sister bought a Dell. It died so she bought another. It died so she bought another about a month ago. I would not buy one and I'm not a gamer. Snorkbox (15764)
1126716 2010-08-11 22:55:00 I would never buy a Dell as my home PC. But here at work, we use their workstations & servers, with full Dell support warranty etc. If we have issues they send someone out within a couple of hours, or express courier forward-replacement parts depending on the situation.

So, as a corporate supplier, imo they are good. For home users - power users in particular, who know what they want - not so.

If by fail you mean a perfect pixel warranty then yes. Most brands require -several- dead pixels before they will allow you to return it. The high end dells and HP allow you to return on any defect or even -perceived- defect, no questions asked.

I'd always prefer advance replacement rather than having to send my faulty equipment back at my own cost, then WAIT for the replacement to arrive; they send you a replacement, then you put your faulty one in the box, attach the included courier sticker and send it back for free.

As far as I'm aware, the best value monitors out there (best quality at cheapest price) are high end HP and Dell - you won't find an LG IPS panel in any cheaper brand. The only other high profile brand that I know that uses LG IPS panels are Philips and Apple, but they are much more expensive for the same panel (with less features in the case of the Apple Cinema Displays)

1126718 2010-08-12 00:03:00 well, if you want the best for a individual it's always gonna be a custom PC .

then again in 1999 when I was at a home stay, a computer technician who worked at the university was only using a Pentium 90 perhaps, I had a AMD 133Mhz or something with 32MB RAM, Win95 . He said Win98 wasn't worth it and all systems could play Quake .

At this IT course I am doing there are some of the workers who are still using Windows XP, some IT students say for many people, if they only need the basics, a 2nd hand computer will do .

1126719 2010-08-12 03:22:00 Last time I looked at a Dell PC, I checked the specifications and compared it to what I could build myself out of parts bought at normal stores.

From memory the base model was about the same price but after you started adding the upgrades you started getting ripped off.

I worked out that an almost exact machine was about $300 cheaper if I built it myself, and for the same price, you could of course build one with much better specifications.

And if you're looking at Alienware, you can save a fortune by doing it yourself or getting a local store to build it for you .

Alienware has been long known to be massively overpriced .

Dell usually uses whatever parts are cheapest (possibly at some reasonable quality level) at the time when they're building your PC .

Yes $300 will significantly upgrade it. I have found many online retailers have stopped making PCs, they are just selling the parts, or reselling other retailers of manufacturers PC's. Maybe they know that many people are now building hteir own, and the margins of building them are pretty low.

1126722 2010-08-13 05:31:00 My first PC was from Warehouse Stationary - it wasn't a gaming machine by any stretch of the imagination (at the time I knew pretty much nothing about current hardware) but it wasn't a brand name PC so it was good because it used standard parts, and was easy to upgrade.

But after the first upgrade which I did myself, I just kept going.

Now, I'd never buy a pre-built PC again unless there was a very good reason. I prefer to build my own, because I know exactly what is going in and I know it's going to be done properly (eg: no Hyena PSUs)

And of course it usually works out cheaper as well! (especially like autechre said about Alienware, which have pricing that is just simply insane)
