1170905 2011-01-19 01:22:00 My daughter and some friends are about to go flatting in Wellington . She is about to get a BB plan with Snap (either Pro or Master Plan, as there will be 8 people in the flat) .

Each flatmate will be contributing to the BB monthly cost, but the problem is there will be different usage patterns - potentially substantially different - that may make an even split of the monthly cost unfair .

There are a couple of 'gamers' - and I imagine there will be a few 'streamers' too, along with the 'just email' profile .

I guess the gamers will be wired, whereas everyone else will use a Wi-Fi connection . As I understand it, there will be no PC permanently connected to the network .

Is there any software/firmware that can be installed on a modem to keep track of usage per device?

1170906 2011-01-19 01:29:00 It will depend on the router.
Your options are gargoyle, dd-wrt, tomato and possibly openwrt.
When one of those are loaded (I use dd-wrt), I use this script (but modify it so it actually works):
code.google.com
wrtbwmon.googlecode.com
You can also then limit the speed of offenders, or cut them off completely.

Gargoyle seems to be the most user friendly though and has the usage per user built in so you don't need the script.

1170907 2011-01-19 02:41:00 You want Gargoyle, recent versions do per-device (MAC) monitoring / throttling / limits. Provided they're not clever cookies and change their MAC Address during the month, all is well ;)

Anyways, look into WebGauge, it does just what you want, no fuss, made by a fellow PF1'er! :)
