1126316 2010-08-10 07:19:00 This economics professor said that those who who have been unemployed for a year or more will have the hardest time getting hired if/when the economy makes any return to normalcy .

Why? They will have become couch potatoes and in the time off they grew stagnant at their profession and would be passed over for the last guys to be laid-off' as they were still sharp for the shorter time off work .

Make any sense to youse guys?

1126317 2010-08-10 07:34:00 Because employers like to hire the already employed.
Then in order of shortest unemployed.

Probably a perception that you are either lazy or there's something wrong with you in an employment sort of way.

Complete **** as usual.

1126320 2010-08-10 23:48:00 I think any gaps have to be explained; if you are such a good employee, why couldn't you find work?
You could always say you were taking a break overseas...?

1126321 2010-08-11 00:02:00 I wonder how good my memory is...
The stats say that if you have been out of work for more than 6 weeks you have a 50% chance of getting back in to work. If you have been out for 10 weeks or more it goes up to 80%.
I remember someone at fonterra vomitting these stats to the staff. It was mainly targetting people on ACC in think not people who just didnt want to work

1126324 2010-08-11 08:55:00 its how life is some ppl get jobs quick and some get them slow thats how things is it doesnt mean they are bad employees| forums12345 (15197)
1126325 2010-08-11 09:03:00 you could always do volunteer work to keep up to date.

volunteer does not work. this is from a career coach - not a recruitment agent. they work with the individual than the employer and advise them what to work on to reach their "end" goal.

re: in the IT industry, some have said that the volunteer roles they have seen are not you work along a experienced IT person and get training. they say that they advertised for a volunteer position but all you do is design a website for them and then after that is maybe see ya later, thanks for your services.

from the employer i guess volunteer work is better than nothing but they may wonder why are you not doing some other work, even non-IT but it pays money. some may think that you are not able to get anything, so you do volunteer work.
