1171715 2011-01-22 11:05:00 Can you run XP inside Windows 7 Pro with out a Virtual Machine?
My Dell Vostro was supplied with W7 & XP discs.
I could dual boot but..........

I was using Win XP then partitioned my hard drive for Win 7. XP shows up as "Earlier Operating System". It works well cos I have a lot of files on my XP system.

1171718 2011-01-23 00:28:00 Yup, thats dual boot. Which you can do. But you cant install XP on the same partition as Win7. Or any other OS. Unless its on another partition, or you install XP mode (or another VM program) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1171719 2011-01-23 00:57:00 You can use either XP Mode for Windows 7 (which is based on Microsoft Virtual PC), MS Virtual PC 2007, VMware Player/Server or VirtualBox, they are all free Virtual Machine Environments. There are other VM systems are there but haven't tried them myself.

I have got XP mode on my Win7 Pro Laptop, plus two other VMs of XP using Virtual PC. Will probably stick VMware Player on it too, as the with VMTools allow me to take better advantage of the graphics capabilities in the VM, it is also more seamless, you can just move the mouse into the VM to use and move it out of the window and use the host OS directly without having the press the hotkeys to switch in and out of the VM/Host OS.

1171720 2011-01-25 06:10:00 I have tried to use Microsoft virtual machine on my Dell Vostro and it is not supported by the Dell. I could update the Bios but as I already have VM Ware I could use that, or dual boot or use an old Desk Top. I only need the XP to test web sites with standard XP fonts. mzee (3324)
1171721 2011-01-25 09:15:00 You'll find that your Vostro will support MS Virtual Machine, but you may have to enable the 'Virtulisation Technology' option from within the BIOS Webbnzl (8810)
1171722 2011-01-26 10:21:00 There is no setting in the Bios for Microsoft Virtual machine hardware support, so I have installed MVWare Workstation 7 with xppro. The Xp is fine, has sound, USB, serial port & printer port support & also goes on-line.

Only problem is that the video driver is not good and the display a bit fuzzy. There is an update for Windows 7 available which I will get sometime.

1171723 2011-01-26 10:23:00 Its called AMD-V or virtualization. Depending on the CPU (AMD or Intel) thats installed. Thats if the CPU supports it Speedy Gonzales (78)
