1171198 2011-01-20 08:13:00 Dear all,

My laptop's CD drive is unable to read any CDs. Whenever I load a CD into the tray, Windows would say something along the line that the CD is unformatted and therefore cannot be read. However, the CDs that I have tried are known to work on other computers. The odd thing is that the CD drive is still able to burn files and folders onto blank CDs.

I had tried blowing gently across the tray's head prior to loading any CD, but that did not resolve the problem.

The laptop's model number is ASUS K50IJ. I was hoping to update the drivers for the CD drive by downloading the latest version from the ASUS website, but it seems that no drivers have been made available.

Same problem occurs with safe mode.

Cheers :)

1171199 2011-01-20 08:18:00 Sounds like cd writing software has stuffed something up. Does the cd appear in device manager? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1171200 2011-01-20 08:20:00 Writing? The CD drive can burn CDs fine, but not reading.

Yes it does show up in Device Manager.

1171201 2011-01-20 08:27:00 What burning programs are on it? And what version of windows is on it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1171202 2011-01-20 08:33:00 I used Windows 7's built-in burning program.

This trick seems to have fixed the problem: support.microsoft.com

Thanks a lot Speedy for taking your time to reply the posts in this thread :)
