| 1171087 | 2011-01-19 18:25:00 | How does one change the template used as "document 1" when opening Word for a new document? I have a "normal.dotm" which is how I want it to open but it defaults to a letter sized format with no top margin. It is then necessary to open the appropriate template before work (!) can begin. I realize that this is probably very basic but the answer has so far eluded my ageing brain cells. TIA. |

| 1171089 | 2011-01-19 18:35:00 | How does one change the template used as "document 1" when opening Word for a new document? Open a blank doc. make your changes - font etc. Note the tick box in these areas - DEFAULT. Make sure you select that. Exit. Now the default is how you set it up. |

| 1171090 | 2011-01-19 18:39:00 | That was quick! Thank you for that. Unfortunately, that has not changed the opening default which remains letter sized with no top margin (and no way to change the top margin.) Incidentally, this odd format does not appear in any of the templates. |

| 1171092 | 2011-01-19 18:48:00 | Um, I'm probably more dense than usual this morning pctek but where exactly should I be looking for the check box? I clicked the DEFAULT button on the font dialogue and it does indeed default to that but the page size and margin continue to elude me. | Blue Druid (4480) | ||
| 1171093 | 2011-01-19 18:54:00 | Sorry Snorkbox. pctek responded while I was replying to you. I guess what I am now looking for is how to make normal.dotm the default. I know there was a simply way in Word 2003 but the 2007 set-up has me all bamboozled. | Blue Druid (4480) | ||

I know there was a simply way in Word 2003 but the 2007 set-up has me all bamboozled. If normal.dotm is what you want as default then overwrite normal.dot with normal.dotm as it is normal.dot that opens by default when you open word. |

| 1171095 | 2011-01-19 19:13:00 | Normal.dot seems to be specific to Word 97-2003 and although I did as you suggested, the opening (document 1) is still wrong and conforms to a configuration that is not included in any of the displayed templates. | Blue Druid (4480) | ||
| 1171096 | 2011-01-19 20:08:00 | I wonder if you're missing the "template" part when saving, I had a similar problem once and kicked myself when I found this! 1.Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Open 2.Do one of the following: In Windows Vista: Click Templates, and then double-click the Normal.dotm file to open it. In Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Click Templates next to File name. If no templates are listed in the Open dialog box, click the arrow next to the Files of type box, and then click All Word Templates. 3.To be certain that you're working in the default template, check to see that Normal.dotm appears in the Word title bar. 4.Make any changes that you want to the fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings. You can use the same commands and features that you use to change a document — but remember that any changes that you make to Normal.dotm will be applied to documents that you create in the future. 5.When you have finished, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save.
