This will probably be one the most major road upgrades in our nick of the woods, particularly if you are traveling from Napier north. Last Christmas I went to Tauranga and sat at the intersection of SH5 and SH1 for about 10 to 15 mins trying to get onto SH1.

It'll be good to get all the trucks off the main road.

1127834 2010-08-15 00:29:00 Got held up at Wairakie 1 Jan heading down south, turned around and headed over the Dam and past the Motor Racing circuit ,I think the rest are still waiting there

Taupo have been waiting along time for this especially the lake front area with trucks thundering outside through out the night

Probably won't worry them, as alot of people just drive through anyway as you can't find a parking space.

1127836 2010-08-15 01:26:00 Sure a pain in ass bottleneck during holiday or silly season, just like Kopu bridge, and coming back to Auckland from up north.
North outta Wellington does not count, never has, never will, not interested, who cares.

1127837 2010-08-15 01:36:00 tauranga authoritys built a 2 lane roundy, it also was to small.

they refused to listen.

one day a 40ft log trailer/tractor and a full size semi got tangeled up on the too small roundy.

land transport and cviu both said after much measuring and gaming, roundy too small.

no drivers at fault.

tauranga authoritys and tauranga cops, would not listen.

insisted on prosecuting one driver.

$10.000.00 + legall costs later, driver found not guilty.

Judge stated ,Tauranga police and authoritys should have listened to cviu and land transport.

Transport operator is still trying to recover costs for prosecution with out foundation.

Perhaps something has been learned, leading to double checks and rectification prior to opening.

I wonder if any beuracrat's will be fired for this gross waste of taxpayer funds.

We saw them working on that when we were in Taupo last weekend. I know what you mean about the long waits to get onto SH1 particularly at weekends.
Last time we came back from Hawkes Bay the queue was huge, the driver in front turned around. We did the same and followed them through a different route. Worked a treat.

Funny you should say that I just found this.

Three roundabouts on one of New Zealand's newest roads are being demolished and rebuilt before the highway is even open to the public - at a cost of millions of dollars.
