1171774 2011-01-23 02:11:00 Well i RMA'd a mobo to CL in mid December and I'm still waiting for the replacement that was supposedly sent last Tuesday according to there site, I have been less than impressed with them over this issue

I am not a fan of them either, when trying to get a quote on a new PC. I have found Alpha City to be really good and good after sales service too. Ascent and PP.co.nz are also very good, but I am not sure if they build their own PCs these days.

1171775 2011-01-23 02:19:00 Well, as far as im concerned, Dell offers great spec'd machine for a price mostly unmatched by any other shop in the country, purely because they have such high turnover.
There are many on here who berate them, however, compared with the amount they sell, the complaints are not that many.
For joe average, Dell is fine

However aftersales support can be a problem, especially with the language barrier. I know an eldery person who simply can't understand what they say, as the call quality is very quiet. Also you don't know what brand of components they use. You also hear of people who have difficulty getting their computers repaired outside the 12 month warranty period, under the CGA. At least when building your own, you can specify asus components.

The last Dell PC I purchased with a laptop wasn't particularly good quality, and it was very cheap silver plastic. Something inside also always buzzes when I tough the touchpad. They said that was normal, but certainly many people complained in forums about it, and it is the only model laptop I know of that does that.
Over time all the additional buttons such as play stop, volume and mute became temperamental and faulty, I suspect the contacts have prematurely worn out.

1171776 2011-01-23 02:43:00 anything from here will be better (even if the specs don't show it): www.elive.co.nz
The only thing Dell I own and don't intend to keep it for very long is a keyboard which i paid $5 for (to much imo they should have paid ME to take it :P) and don't expect to last. I would never buy anything from dell. There service sucks about as much as there hardware. Most of it is made out of cheap parts that won't last more than 5 minutes. The only thing worse is AlienWare. Which is "high end" dells painted black minus about 4gb of ram and with about $1500 added. Aleast you get a colourful keyboard.

DON"T BUY DELL.

Yes I normally use Ascent but at the time they didn't have the mobo I wanted and since CL get rated highly on here I went with them

Im sorry bud, but you are just parrotting what you have heard. Dell in one of if not the biggest OEM in the world. The thought that they sell crap is ludicrous, a business model such as that just wouldnt work. What most here forget in the % of failure against units sold isnt really that bad. I will concede that dealing with customer support is differcult, but not impossible and as for reliability, I have circa P3's in the garage that still run well for what they are.
Alienware are not high end Dells at all, but another OEM bought out by Dell.

I dont know whats more disturbing, the scare monger tactics on this thread or the laughable ignorance.....

1171779 2011-01-23 04:09:00 It's like anything out there on the Internet . We sure hear about the bad stuff, but how many good stuff do we hear about .

The organisation is so big, they sell so much to corporates and consumers .

One can talk about international call centres / product supports; but that is just how the world works now . Norton Ghost used to be a NZ product, so have ohters and or they have relocated abroad, Navman, Fisher and Paykel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1171780 2011-01-23 04:19:00 My experience over 25 years or so is that "Brand Name" computers tend to be over hyped, under specced and have parts that may or may not last as long as expected . Service is generally slow and sometimes reluctant . Software problems are "solved" by restoring from an image from a hidden partition, causing a loss of all data and self installed programs . This is a broad brush opinion and applies more or less to all the brands

Probably slightly less to Dell as they market more to business then the others, and reliability is an important factor for the business sector . Service seems variable, some people get instant responses and others left frustrated as hell from the feedback I have come across . The only contact you have with them is by phone . They retail through Dick Smith so have a look at your computer before you buy at least!

If I were you I would draw up a list of requirements you have for your computer and post them here, and ask for reliable suppliers for the various builds that our experts will submit . Doing this will get you a good computer, a reliable supplier, and value for money . What more could you ask for?

Wrong, big time. Besides our production machines (which are apple) All other machines are dell. These machines are on 24/7 and only turned off for 2 weeks over the xmas break. Solid as. These are their high end machines/workstations as well as their home/office machines.

1171782 2011-01-23 06:52:00 Many thanks to everyone for their input. Our requirements are fast processor, 4 GB RAM, 1 TB Hard Drive, Windows Business Edition, Good sound system. Don't use a lot of graphics. What about the Acer X3950-047 & 24 LCD Monitor? Also what are peoples views on Easy Lease? dianne pierce (13385)
1171783 2011-01-23 07:10:00 Acer ? Read my post on "Brand Names"
One of the problems with "Brand Names" is they come as they are from China , Malaysia, or Taiwan etc Switch on\run pay go. The retailer has no idea, its a product, pay, go is all they know. Buying from a computer shop usually means a superior level of knowledge of the product and a level of commitment to the product THEY put together.
