1128571 2010-08-17 06:28:00 Bet you only see this in the more well heeled areas of town.

What? They have had them in various supermarkets for ages now.
And in less affluent areas too.

I tried it once, thing complained and whinged about every 3rd object I attempted to scan - it took so much time with the supervisor having to come over and attend to it that I gave up.

1128572 2010-08-17 06:32:00 I have used them over in the USA last year and that was ok until I bought wine and it wouldn't scan and told me that an assistant was required to be called to verify my age! Fair enough I guess. Also the voice sounded like a female version of Microsoft Sam.

1128573 2010-08-17 07:02:00 They have had them at our local New World for a year or so.
I dont use them.
I like to help young people keep a job.

But we all have to realise that when governments say they want to create jobs and they ask companies to do so that does not work.

Companies (and bosses) do not wake up each morning and say "Wow I'd like to employee some more people"
They wake and say I want to make more sales and cut back on my expenses.

Winston and the Greens put our minimum wages up and added a 4th holiday week. That was a massive cost to small businesses.

Here in Tauranga a local mussel factory has just doubled its production. They used to employ 200 people. The new plant has 38 mussel opening machines designed in New Zealand. So that's 200 jobs that wont be created.

Another Taurnga conpany is working on a kiwi fruit picking machine.
That's more jobs going.

Many jobs can be automated and outsourced.

Nurses, hairdressers and home care are a few of the safe jobs in western countries.
