1128443 2010-08-18 03:44:00 The suspense is killing me . How did you get your foot of the rattler witout getting bit? .

I had my 5-year old daughter pass me a stiff broom and I unwrapped the snake while I slid my foot back a little bit and held it's head down with the bristles of the broom .

I jumped straight up and gave the broom a big push at the same time --- and I made it .

The snake was a little miffed and slithered away - but I felt pretty good after I started breathing again .

Once in a while when I go trout fishing I get a juvenile rattler grab at me but they aren't really fast enough in the cooler months before the hotter weather . I did wind up with a broken off fang in my boot once from one of them though .

Nasty little buggers .

You couldn't have just stepped a little bit harder? How solid are their skulls?

It's my one completely non-negotiable phobia. Went to a zoo in Australia once and was offered a touch of one. The woman looked offended when I didn't even humour her...

I had a pair of those shower shoes we call 'flip-flops' that are made from a foam rubber of sorts and are just a flat platform with rubber straps over the foot to keep it on .

There wasn't much chance of developing much pressure on the snake's head and besides I worried that he might get out from under soon and I don't think I thought of crushing him to death at the moment .

Retaliation would come later - if there was a later .

1128447 2010-08-18 14:43:00 Yeah, we have those shoes, call 'em jandals, and we wear them everywhere (except the shower!).

Can you interrupt Norway's Aquavit shipping? It must go right past youse guys as it gets shipped from Norway to Australia and then returned to Norway to create that unique flavor when it gets heated in the Equatorial crossing.

It seems they've got too much libation on their hands.

They are here too in the wild . Many people have them in Koi ponds as do I . But I don't like them in the lakes and rivers where I fish .

They tear up the natural fauna and destroy the mating arenas for the indigenous fish in the same waters .

As far as eating them goes - well, typically Caucasian persons such as myself don't like to at them for all the bones .

Middle-Europeans, Latinos and Jewish people consume them the most .

Gefilte Fish (דגים ממולאים) is a cold-processed Kosher food made of carp and most often served during Pesach (פָּסַח) that is sold in the markets . I don't care much for it but it is good-tasting .

I wish many more people would eat a lot more carp . That might cut down the numbers of them in my favorite lakes and streams .

BTW: there is no limit on the number of carp you can catch - and many times tournament fishermen will accidentally catch one and they just toss them up on the shore to die or feed the coyotes and birds .

It's all a good thing . Somebody's gotta take care of feeding the coyotes .

1128450 2010-08-19 20:58:00 Joe, soak the carp fillets in vinegar for about 6 hrs, and then in milk for about six to 12 hours, and you will have no bones plus a very tasty piece of fish

Seems like a shameful waste of vinegar and milk .

The acid in the vinegar must soften or dissolve the bones I guess and the lactic acid neutralizes the situation - right?
