1127587 2010-08-14 06:35:00 Wow I'm looking forward to 675mbps internet for me :) Netsukeninja (13296)
1127588 2010-08-14 08:29:00 Well we'll see. although the international average for the US is around 7mb/s the people who do have a decent connection have a REALLY decent connection. especially those near research institutes and the like. a fiber connection would make a significant improvent over ADSL regardless of speed although the prices and caps will have to change. I will be happy when I see the $10 unlimited dial up replaced with $10 unlimited ADSL  The Error Guy (14052)
1127589 2010-08-14 10:00:00 "It means exactly that - the idea has always been to switch NZ's entire phone infrastructure to VoIP - which requires a power supply. Part of that process includes some kind of battery backup system to keep the phone working when the power goes off - I can't remember where the figure came from, but the number I've heard was around two days"

So these wizards have forgotten the Auckland great power outage of 1998 and they think two days would be long enough. But not everyone will have VOIP phones - there will still be many homes that don't have/don't want broadband. I guess they have to get a mobile for reliable phone service. Now that's an oxymoron isn't it!

You might be able to plug your equipment into your car battery :D

The mobiles will only run until their batteries and the batteries running the towers run out. If you're worried about power in Auckland you'd be hoping that Vector aren't being distracted from their day job.

If you end up with Fibre to the Home you will have VOIP whether it is a special phone or an adapter. Even with some sort of DSL over copper it would be up to your supplier whether they still supported analogue phones by doing the conversion in their cabinet equipment or you needed VOIP phones or adapters. The old exchanges will be replaced.

If Chorus is using it, then it is likely to be legit and it works. However I suspect the news story is just wrong, and it will only improve things in your own house so it is not that much of a big deal.

The news story was wrong and has been changed to "a device that will make broadband internet up to 50 per cent faster "
