1172211 2011-01-24 06:25:00 Civ V is lagging badly in the later game, and meters indicate the CPU is under high use (like 90%), it only being a Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz.
Before anyone asks, no I do not want to overclock, because the 2GB RAM I am using (averaging 70-80% usage in Civ V) is not particularly high speed, and atm I cannot afford to upgrade both.

So can anyone recommend a good place to get a Core 2 Quad Q9-series or Core 2 Extreme processor fairly cheaply? Trademe seems to have a dearth of them, or ones priced reasonably less than on Pricespy.
Any help appreciated - I just my games to run smoothly!

P.S. Nvidia 260 graphics card, and Just Cause 2 and Assassin's Creed II run just fine, so it is definitely the CPU I believe.

Er, yeah perhaps. But GPU is always, always more importnat then CPU.

If you want used I'd take a look on Gameplanets Buy/Sell forum. Better prices than Trademe.
New - a reputable shop.

1172213 2011-01-24 09:18:00 Definitely used - I'm after a sub-$300 price here. And my graphics card is over the recommended requirements and handles FPSes fine, and Civ V runs fine in the early game - as the calculations build up with more visible in the late game it begins to lag. The recommended requirements say a quad core too.
Sadly GP Forums don't have any quad cores - just would be buyers :(

1172214 2011-01-24 18:49:00 You could get an E7500 for about $190 retail. Somewhere like PBTech can probably source a Q8400 for $280ish. If you could event get a Core2 Extreme anymore retail, it would be well over your budget, and pctek has already named a couple places you could look for second hand options. inphinity (7274)
1172215 2011-01-24 20:11:00 Id love to upgrade to SB. if I could sell the Mobo\CPU and RAM together I would....My Kentifield has been running at 3Ghz since I got it back in 2008.. SolMiester (139)
1172216 2011-01-24 20:25:00 For an Intel C2D or C2Q I'd go trademe - they are pretty much impossible to kill, so the chances of getting a dud a very very low.

Me too, DemonHunter is planning a build with SB soon, I'm very keen to see how it runs. I'm rather happy with my lynnfield system though.

Yes Civ 5 is fairly CPU intensive and the dual cores do struggle.

Are you sure your motherboard does not have RAM multipliers in the bios allowing you to overclock without blowing your ram speed out?. 3 to 3.5GHz is usually very easy on the E5200.

1172219 2011-01-25 21:28:00 Not many games use more than 2 cores effectively, I don't play Civ V so cant say if it's one of them.

If research indicates Quad core then trademe is probably your best bet but otherwise you could try something like www.pp.co.nz
I note on in the performance link posted a dual core i3 is actually fairly high up the list so maybe a fast dual core would do the trick

1172220 2011-01-25 21:50:00 Yeah I saw in that my graphics card (GTX 260) didn't do well at all, and I am using a 1920X1200 screen. Sounds like yet another damn graphics card upgrade will be needed -dies-. But I can't give up my HD screen now! darthcarnate (14113)
