| 1129402 | 2010-08-19 05:03:00 | ...there was an article about a female bodybuilder. In a short c/p as follows::: ibid: A diminutive figure at 5ft 2in and a little over 8st, she steps forward to a barbell before gingerly resting it on her back. Slowly she squats, the muscles of her back, arms and legs rippling as she confidently lifts a weight that would leave most men red faced and defeated. She can "dead lift" two-and-a-half times her weight (135kg) from the floor. "I get teased a lot in the gym by the guys. They see what I am lifting and try but can't do it," she said. I know that '8st' stands for eight stones. Are they big or little stones? And - really why do youse guys mix inches/feet with stones and kilograms? Isn't there a single standard of measure and weights that are consistent with Metric or The King's Nose values that get used all the time? Since we are on the subject of 'Weights & Measures" - I also remember the following little ditty about 'Molly Malone" ::: In Dublin's fair city Where girls are so pretty My Molly stands out 'Cause she weighs eighteen stone I don't mind her fat - but.... It's not only that - but.... She's cock-eyed and musclebound, Molly Malone. She wheels her wheelbarrow Through streets that are narrow Her barrow is narrow, Her hips are too wide. So wherever she wheels it... The neighbors all feel it Her girdle keeps scraping The homes on each side. |

| 1129403 | 2010-08-19 05:36:00 | As it happens Monitors and TVs are still measured on the diagonal in inches rather than Centimetres for a reason that totally escapes me. I still use inches, feet and yards in regular conversation but don't use pounds, shillings and pence. |

| 1129404 | 2010-08-19 05:42:00 | 1 stone = 14lbs. There is an official standard that is metric. Perhaps the news media were pandering to you poor benighted backwards people who can't even spell English, let alone use metric measures! The youngsters around the place use metric; us oldies tend to be a bit more flexible. I learned what 20lb and 40lb felt like when you lifted it because I spent quite a bit of time lifting boxes of fruit, and they were the standard sizes of fruit box in those days when we still packed things in kahikatea boxes. I also know what a hundred weight weighs through carrying bags of cement in my youth. I wouldn't have the foggiest what the metric equivalents are now. |

All the ads for TVs these days are in metric - the days of 23" and 26" teevs have long gone, haven't they? And when I bought my current monitor about four years ago it was metric as well. Have I missed something? |

We are so-o-o fortunate to have the King's/Queen's Nose to measure with and that makes it a lot easier - at least until an Italian gets into Royal's the fuel supply. |
