1172038 2011-01-24 19:44:00 You don't have to be a member of AA to shop or get their discounts :)

www.aa.co.nz

thanks for the link....... :D

but I was kinda shocked when I saw it...

for example: Tomtom XXL 550, on the AA site, if you are a member: $310

the same model, found on pricespy, pointed me to DSE, for $229.......

1172039 2011-01-24 19:45:00 I have seen tourist campervans get sent down through the Moleworth by the GPS units in the camper before and even heard of one that allegedly tried to send someone down the Rainbow road which is 4WD only.

Powerover see this thread over at Chat (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and see if it suits you too

1172043 2011-01-25 00:40:00 What country u living in. Roads change plenty. Also many have roads that don't exist so try and shunt you down the wrong way, one way roads change all the time so you may get directed down a one way road in the wrong direction, etc. The list goes on.
The GPS companies dont only make their money from selling the GPS but also ripping you a good one to update the map that is wrong.

NZ, Wellington. I have used it as a tourist to the South Island and Auckland. It's been fine, there was a change of roading on the highway somewhere ... I can do fine without paying $150 odd every year.

I just use common sense and GPS isn't the end of it all. The best IMO is a paper map and general navigation skills and maybe a compass to assist.

If I was a courier driver I might thou ..

GPS also don't take account on when roads are closed to maybe prevent boy racers, was in Chc that time, so I just zoomed out and drove towards that area until it re-established the route for me ..... I also find that even if you are going to Auckland from Wellington, pretty straight forward, at times it might as you to detour into the back road b/c it think it gets you there faster.

1172044 2011-01-25 05:10:00 I have a garmin 255 which I got from Harv's for $149 when the Nelson store opened and they were that again at chissy. has everything you need and lets be fair, Nelson isn't a big place. You won't need it for long.

Any map update should include the new ruby bay bypass, but that isn't (or wasn't last time I looked) on google maps yet. The Garmin maps are also not so great in Nelson with two or three one way roads, but that could just be an update issue.

Have used my unit all over NZ and in Oz as it came with free Oz maps, is really good for the $. Value for money has been hard to fault.

Best thing about a GPS is knowing that you will be somewhere in exactly 43 minutes rather than about half past four.....etc - is great for planning sales calls etc.

1172046 2011-01-25 05:54:00 went to the DSE today in palmy..tried some of their displayed units.

the navman ezy30, didn't like it, a bit too small, the control is a bit fiddly..

the tomtom start10, didn't like it, same reason as above..

maybe I am expecting too much?? after all I have never dealt with GPSs before....

they have the Garmin Nuvi1260, I wanted to play with it but they don't have it on display....

If I am correct, if I purchase a Garmin GPS unit I will have the benefit of free new map updates from NZ open GPS project am I right? I just download the map on my computer then somehow put it on my GPS right?? Can any other brands of GPS do that as well or is it just for Garmin??

Thanks heaps for the input guys, really appreciated :D

1172047 2011-01-25 05:58:00 Yeah that website should have the maps for free. So you have the NZ free map as well as the official Garmin one.
I don't have the car version Garmin, I have the hiking version and it works.

Can someone say if that free map still have turn by turn voice guidance

Check for compatibility first, not sure if every single Garmin is compatible.
