1129169 2010-08-26 12:51:00 That's awesome jd, and I see you're using linux, which scares the crap out of me :s
I know a lot of people your age are comfortable using computers, but at 13, building a machine out of used parts is not something that your average 13 year old can do.
I was able to build a computer at about 16, but even then I would've struggled (I'm 23 now), so you'll go a long way in IT if you keep at it, which I'm sure you will as you're obvioulsy passionate about computers.
All the best mate.

1129170 2010-08-27 11:04:00 Is there any training that someone could recommend? jd2759 (15763)
1129171 2010-08-27 11:22:00 training for what? computers? I had myself a good mentor. Taught me stuff like HTML and from there I set up my own website (see longsword in my signature) and learn't php, got my radio license with him and he taght me VB C# C+ C++ ect
trick is, dont get stuck in one tiny place. although that is kinda cool you get hung up. expand!! if they sow the seeds you harvest the rewards. win win situation!!

1129172 2010-08-27 13:02:00 Is there a better distro than ancient versions of Ubuntu to run on old PCs?

Congrats on building your first PC. I hope you get given a lot of spare parts to play around with - sorting through a pile of junk & finding something useful is part of the fun.

Define an old PC...

What I have noticed most of the time is that CPU is not an issue, but the RAM is what really causes problems.

For example a 566Mhz Celeron with 256MB RAM I tried Lubuntu.

It boots fast, the LXDE desktop is quick and responsive... but once booted you are left with about 7MB free RAM, so load anything else it starts using swap file which is horribly slow.

Clearly 512MB would have been better but said PC only supported 256MB maximum.

Puppy or Damn Small Linux may have been better in this case.

Damn Small Linux is actually really nice. Only 50MB, can run on a 486 with 16MB RAM and has a nice GUI and good applications. Probably the lightest you can get while still being easy to use and with a GUI.

1129174 2010-08-27 16:12:00 Gentoo, with openbox, after you've waited for 2-3 weeks for it to compile ;)

Seriously though, congrats on putting together your first PC. It's a rewarding experience getting it all fired up and working. Here's hoping it's the first of many more for you! :-)
You may want to investigate something a little newer / nicer than such an old Ubuntu version too... Puppy or DSL as has been mentioned :)
