I enjoy Thinkad X series which is the ultraportables, expensive, so I get used, slower CPU, builtin graphics, 12" screen, to me it meets the purpose and I like it portable. I had a X series at uni many moons ago and I bought a newer used one not long ago.

I've known a Singaporean who had a Thinkpad T series it might of been, that is in between a ultraportable and a standard one with a nicer 13" screen I think.

A friend in Singapore got tricked in paying for a motherboard replacement for his out of warranty 3yr old laptop. When you could actually buy a new laptop about the same price and he just needed it for admin work, he works, so it's just Yahoo email and website etc.. and in Singapore most people have 3G wireless modems. In NZ it's the other way round, it's ADSL here, 3G is v v expensive.

From what I did before, I think that laptops at the low end should fit uni's students unless they need it for technical users (or studies) or games. They are priced similar to NZ but like Singapore, NZ's low end products don't have a international warranty. Not really an issue IMHO because these good are really perishible. Like the students I known, they like to have fancy laptops so it might just come down to what you want. If you want an i7 CPU and a large screen, dedicated graphics etc etc .. For higher end stuff I imagine it would be cheaper in Singapore maybe by 20-33%.

Yeah .. that Lenovo Ideapad. In NZ they are quite expensive than the USA market, not sure about Singapore. For a range of prices in NZ, see here, these prices are about as best as you can get without being scammed.

But if you want a Sandy Bridge, you'll be paying top dollar...

I have very bad experiences with Toshiba laptops. I studied in a polytechnic for 3 years, and Toshibas were widely known for having a lot of problems. The hard disks and speakers were particularly famous for breaking down.

Sandy bridge...not so much top dollar. The asus in my first post is about $1300, the Lenovo i linked is about $1400(found another site selling it for cheaper).

I will be using the laptop for at least 3 years so i figured decent specs would be a good way to go.
