1129597 2010-08-21 08:16:00 Judging from some of the comments under the Youtube video, some don't think this a useful topic. I beg to differ. At our uni, a problem in the past was had with some Asians unfamiliar with how to use our toilets. They would squat on top of the seat with their feet on the seat. Made a bit of a mess for later users. They had to post instructions on how to use the toilet correctly in the cubicles. It is something we don't consider to be an issue until it becomes one.

I think nowadays, new Asian students must be educated on toilet use as part of their intro to the uni and NZ in general.

I found the toilets in France (the squat down ones) not uncomfortable to use. Made me wonder about those who could not squat down fully though.

Yes, the geothermal students at Grafton would leave the seats a complete mess. Now I understand they were standing on the damned toilet seat!
Gotta wonder what they did about the absence of a dipper and water (shudders at the thought).

As for the hygeine, well I suppose it must work, as their population is enormous. However, I suspect left handers such as myself would be at a distinct disadvantage.

Mental note: Take a roll of TP if ever crossing the East, or take a big #### before going! And stay away from lefties!

Might explain why they like curries... less solid waste at point of exit, and a supply of cool water to relieve the skin.

Suspect the squatting posture could encourage hemmorhoids however.

1129599 2010-08-21 22:08:00 In that culture it is considered an insult to offer your left hand in friendship too .

Just a thought .

The Right hand is for 'noble purposes above the navel' whilst the Left hand 'is for less-than honorable' purposes .

Dipping a grape leaf into the couscous with your left hand at the buffet is a No-No .

Au contraire - apparently the squatting posture creates a better position for evacuation; I have been told (no academic references!) that the colon is straighter than it is in our sitting position, and therefore you don't strain.

You also don't mess around sitting staring into space or reading magazines in the dunny (or little squares of the Auckland Weekly News, as we did in my childhood). If you are squatting, you get in there, do your business and go, so there is no continuing pressure on the blood vessels that become haemorrhoids if badly treated.

1129601 2010-08-22 00:12:00 SJ - where did you get your subject line for this post? AFAIK Tamil Nadu is one of the states of India, not the name for a dunny. A bit insulting don't you think, to imply that a state is a dunny? The guy in the video refers to it as an Eastern latrine. John H (8)

Hm. I didn't remember - and I certainly didn't make it up as I have no idea where or what Tamil Nadu is/was or should be used for.

I'm going with what I believe I got as a hotlink from Good Morning Silicon Valley as that was where I picked this link up in the first place.

I don't speak the language and it never raised a red flag to me.

Their header was just as I Copy/Pasted it from their site - "Using A Tamil Nadu" - so if there's any transgression it was prolly forwarded by me as I have no idea of the term prior to that situation.

I pulled a screen shot off the video and I found this though::

It certainly wasn't my intention to slight or insult anyone - and as such I didn't confirm the title from that other site either.

Mea culpa. Thank-you for the (late) heads-up.

Now - on to defending 'Dunny' - which is a proper name here in the US.

1129603 2010-08-22 01:44:00 Ah, gottit - the word 'in' got missed out. You didn't rattle my cage SJ; it really was just a heads up.

What do you mean by dunny being a real name though? Is it the name of a town or a family? Oops. Dunny is a really common name for a lavatory in my generation at least. Not particularly polite usage, but...

The other names from my childhood, not commonly heard now, are khazi (too similar to the Afghani president's name for safe usage now) and kybo. It was the usual name for a dunny in Boy Scouts terminology... See en.wikipedia.org and en.wikipedia.org

I was following my dad's best learning point (to me) when he said 'the best defense is a good offense' .

I was yankin' (the verb, not the noun) your chain .

To all the people in Tamil Nadu (and you know who you are) - sorry I called your state a privy .

It was an accident .

1129605 2010-08-22 09:15:00 Sounds like the name should be changed to "Good Morning Tamil Nadu Valley" SP8's (9836)
1129606 2010-08-22 10:33:00 As well as that, I notice that he didn't say how you are supposed to get your bum dry before you pull your pants up.

I thought if done correctly your bum does not get wet?

Found that quite funny. "You must take the window and put it down"
