1174067 2011-01-31 09:52:00 Hi Team

In the past when my screen was slow to rebuild or the odd icon reverted to a generic type, all I had to do was delete shelliconcache (for W2K) or iconcache-db (for XP-Pro) and it would rebuild at the next boot.

I had a few problems with slow icons in recent times so I did that and it rebuilt fine. A few days ago some of my custom icons reverted to generic so I deleted as usual but this time it has not rebuilt at all.

The icons do come up, including my custom jobbies, but very slowly and I assume that they are drawing their information from the 'desktop' file which I see has all my icons in it.

Naturally I have enabled the ability to see hidden files and that is still set, but the iconcache file is awol.

So how do I get the OS to rebuild that file? I've done a web search but didn't find anything helpful at all.

Cheers

Sorry Speedy, I've had a long day out in the sun and I only got back to this late in the day.

It is XP-Pro, and I have made some progress in that my old backups 'iconcache.old' files are now showing, but a new file has still not been created.

I got them back in view via a tip on a European site. which suggested right-clicking the desktop, going to Properties/Settings/Colour Quality and changing from 32 bit to 16 bit, then back again to 32 bit. That immediately popped up the missing backups but didn't produce a new iconcache.db.

I'm going to pack it in for the night now, and I'll see what happens when I boot up again in the morning. I did read one comment that said two reboots were needed, but in the past (on W2K) I only ever needed one and the same single boot seemed to work ok last time I rebuilt it on this computer.

1174070 2011-01-31 21:22:00 Well, strange as it may seem, I can confirm that the change from 32 bit to 16 bit, then back to 32 bit again (followed by a reboot) restored the iconcache.db file and the screen appeared instantly with all icons in place.

Ours is not to reason why...............but I'd love to know by what convoluted logic or how deeply the depths of sheer desperation were plumbed to find that particular solution!

Cheers
