2011-01-31 05:37:00 | I have a customer, whose elderly mother (80 ish) lives in the Pahiatua Area. ( just outside of Palmerston North) The lady is wanting a new laptop - her first Computer, and has no idea about anything, even how to unpack it and turn it on. What I need is a Tech , or someone with some knowledge, (actual knowledge - not just think they know) who can set up the Laptop for her, setup a new Internet connection, setup and use skype, email, antivirus software and generally spend a bit of time doing some teaching the basics along with how to use the Internet, Skype etc, as well as be available when future help is required. Shes willing to pay, but of course has no idea as to the actual costs and her daughter ( my customer) feels she will be easily taken advantage of from the toaster shops, selling her everything she doesn't need, including the kitchen sink. I would do the job myself, but its a little bit out of my distance I normally travel. Have to speak to the Daughter, But I may supply the laptop and do a partial setup before supplying, or the person I approve may sell her one. Any one in the Area that can help, or know of anyone who could -- Only serious replies please.

Some older people are actually easier to teach, as they know what respect is and are willing to be taught. Not like some smart arse that thinks they know it all. |

2011-01-31 06:32:00 | Good point LL. Its not so much the learning from what I gather, its the actual setting up. She doesn't have or ever had any sort of Internet connection, and according to my customer, she will have problems, thus needs help to get started. Then when she gets into trouble, some one trusting to call who can help. I'd gladly do it, in fact I could do the lot from here, Laptop, programs etc, with the exception of setting up the Internet connection on site, shes scared of doing it wrong - she needs hand on teaching at first, shown once, she learns quickly from what I'm told.

2011-01-31 07:03:00 | Hi Wainuitech. There is an active SeniorNet group in Palmerston North that might be able to offer some help in a case like this. They have been teaching over 55's for a number of years and they also have some members who have a strong technical background. The nearest SeniorNet to you is in Lower Hutt so they will be able to put you in touch with the right person. I have in the past been in touch with the Tech person in that group but have lost contact some time ago.

2011-01-31 07:10:00 | I could help but I am too far away ... Set up a PC, I done that before, bought a used laptop on TM (I like ultraportables you see), reload the CDs they were given to me by seller, set up BB or dialup which I done recently when my modem fell over. The works, Skype, MS AV, MS Outlook/Express. IMHO I don't believe that manual IP BS, all orgs use DHCP and it's a large component in the technical training. Heck, just pay me petrol and an hour or two of labour, you can supply all the products :D Some older people may be a bit cranky, but I taught some how to calculate FX rates when her daughter went over to Oz or which method was the best to use.
