| 1173570 | 2011-01-29 23:11:00 | Satellite broadband connection A while back I had my laptop set up for satellite broadband but have lost the documentation in an upgrade to a new machine with Win7. I have downloaded TCPOptimizer and CableNut and have run a TCP/IP Analyzer with the following settings; « SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results » Tested on: 01.23.2011 22:36 IP address: 118.82.xxx.xxx Client OS: Windows 7 TCP options string: 020405b401010101 MSS: 1460 MTU: 1500 TCP Window: 1500 (NOT multiple of MSS) RWIN Scaling: 0 bits Unscaled RWIN : 1500 Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840 BDP limit (200ms): 60kbps (8KBytes/s) BDP limit (500ms): 24kbps (3KBytes/s) MTU Discovery: OFF TTL: 188 Timestamps: OFF SACKs: OFF IP ToS: 00000000 (0) I note that the TCP/IP Optimzer help file shows different settings than the current v3.0.6 layout, just to make things more confusing. I have tried to set the RWIN to 128480 in CableNut but the Analyzer doesn't show as such. Can anyone suggest the correct sequence of finding the best settings (to be added via CableNut, or TCPOptimizer) for a 2MB/512kb satellite link. The setup appears to have about 1300ms lag and TTL that ranges from about 46 to 232. Cheers Gary |

If the packet sizes are too small then the satellite lag can significantly influence how fast the downloads are. If the packets are too large and get corrupted in transmission, then there is a large loss of data that then needs to be re-transmitted causing slow downloads. I expect that settings would need to be site-specific (for various locations relative to the satellite used) due to lag variations. I am led to believe that specific settings are needed for the TCP/IP functions. Cheers Gary |
